Haiti loses to El Salvador 0-1 in Gold Cup

HOUSTON (AP) — Rodolfo Zelaya scored off a saved penalty kick in the second half, and El Salvador edged Haiti 1-0 to advance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Monday night.

The victory earned El Salvador (1-1-1, 4 points) a berth in the quarterfinals of the biennial tournament. Haiti (1-2, 3 points) could still reach the quarterfinals as one of two best third-place teams, pending other results.

Group B leader Honduras (2-0, 6 points), which already is through to the next stage, plays Trinidad and Tobago (0-1-1, 1 point) in the nightcap of a doubleheader at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Zelaya netted the goal after Haiti goalkeeper Frandy Montrevil stopped his penalty kick in the 76th minute. The goal was not without controversy, as Haiti players adamantly protested linesman Philippe Biere's foul call on Jean Marc Alexandre, which was upheld by referee Javier Santos.

Trinidad advances over Honduras

HOUSTON (AP) — Kenwyne Jones had a goal and an assist, helping Trinidad and Tobago to a 2-0 victory over Honduras to advance to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Canadian military couple fights for adopted child's right to citizenship

Not Canadian enough?

Sarah Currie and her husband Mike are an Ottawa-based couple looking forward to bringing a child in their lives: 23-month-old Smith, a boy currently living in a Haitian orphanage.

But what should be a joyful moment is clouded by the fact that the federal government has rejected the couple's application to pass down citizenship to their son, due to an obscure legal technicality that puts foreign-born Canadians at a disadvantage.

Sarah and Mike are thoroughly Canadian. Both are descended from multiple generations of Canadians. They live in Canada and pay their taxes. Their parents on both sides served in the Canadian Armed Forces, and Mike has done three tours in Afghanistan (his last name can’t be used because he’s still on active duty).

But here's the problem: Mike and Sarah were both born in Germany while their parents were working with the military. According to changes made to Bill C-37 in 2009, born-abroad Canadians can't transfer their citizenship to their children if those children weren’t born in Canada.

Nerlens Noel to wear No. 5 to recognize NBA teams that overlooked him

Haitian NBA prospect Nerlens Noel isn’t about to forget his NBA Draft night experience. The former University of Kentucky player plans to wear No. 5 during his rookie season with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to an ESPN report, to recognize the teams that passed on the one-and-done big man.

Noel’s draft stock slipped after the 6-foot-11 center tore his anterior cruciate ligament in February and missed the rest of his freshman season at UK. When the June 27 draft rolled around, Noel went as one of the night’s biggest snubs.

Finally, after names such as UNLV’s Anthony Bennett and Indiana’s Victor Oladipo fell off the board, the New Orleans Pelicans selected Noel sixth. Then the organization traded him to the 76ers, along with a first-round 2014 pick, for Jrue Holiday and this year’s 42nd pick.

Jennifer Abel earns diving bronze at FINA world championships

BARCELONA – July 20, 2013 - First-year partners Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., and Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., made a spectacular comeback to win the bronze medal in the women’s three-metre synchro diving event on Saturday at the FINA World Aquatic Championships.

Wu Minxia and her new partner Shi Tingmao of China took the gold with 338.40 points, Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape of Italy were second at 307.80 and Abel and Ware followed at 292.08. Minxia has been on the winning three-metre synchro team at the past three Olympics and six of the last seven world championships.

Abel is a two-time Olympian who teamed with Emilie Heymans the last two seasons earning bronze at the 2012 Olympics and silver at the last worlds in 2011 in Shanghai. This year, Abel and Ware have enjoyed success together winning three international medals and two Canadian titles.

On Saturday, the pair had a rough start and were in 10th place with two dives remaining. However they climbed to sixth in the fourth round and third after their fifth and final twisting dive earned them a string of 7.5’s and 8.0’s.

‘’I don’t think we have come close yet to reaching our full potential,’’ said Abel, 21. ‘’I think we showed today how strong we are mentally by never giving up. We have a similar style and show a lot of height and power on our dives. I’m excited about the future.’’

Ware said the early rounds just fired her up.

SRT CEO Ralph Gilles puts Dodge rumors to rest, says brand is 'here to stay'

Rumors that Dodge has been earmarked for the slaughterhouse are false according to SRT CEO Ralph Gilles.

One month ago today, a speculative story on Wards Auto theorized that Dodge might soon disappear. Nameplates would be parsed out to other members of the Fiat-Chrysler family and, at least in theory, the norm would be maintained.

Not so, says Gilles, one of the industry’s more social-media savvy executives. Responding to a question asked of him via Instagram, Gilles denied that Dodge could be on the way out, although he did admit the brand might become “more focused” in the future.

Ambiguous as that is, it’s easy to imagine Gilles’ comment signaling brand outliers like the Grand Caravan minivan and Durango body-on-frame SUV being discontinued.

Adonis Stevenson KOs Chad Dawson in first round

“Superman don’t need no seat belt.”—Muhammad Ali

Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KOs), aka Superman, in his first fight at light heavyweight, lived up to his ring moniker by KO’ing WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-3, 17 KOs) with a single punch at 1:16 of the very first round.

Dawson, fighting out of the red corner in black and red trunks, came out at the opening bell using his height and speed to full advantage. But Stevenson, fighting out of the blue corner and wearing Kronk gold, was determined to test Dawson, and the sooner the better.

Ignoring the body to go headhunting, a left hand dropped Dawson as though he’d been shot. Bad Chad struggled to his feet and beat the count, but was in no shape to continue. Referee Michael Griffin wisely waved it off.

After the fight, Stevenson said, “Do you know why people don’t want to fight me? Do you understand now? You know Kessler, Froch, they don’t want to fight me. Now you know why. The game plan was to use my speed, put the pressure, and as soon as I had a good chance, I put my left on top. I catch him, and that’s a beautiful punch.

“Emanuel Steward he told me if you have a chance to mix it with Chad Dawson or Tavoris Cloud, take the fight, you’re going to knock them out easy. So I take the fight and that’s what happens now. It’s a dream come true. I worked very hard for this fight. I’m world champion. I’m very happy. I want to unify the title with Bernard Hopkins. I want to fight Andre Ward.”

Haiti stellar in 2-0 Gold Cup win over Trinidad and Tobago

MIAMI GARDENS — Haiti forward Jean Eudes Maurice has had a hard time breaking onto the first team for his club squad, Paris Saint-Germaine.

He's been lent out, put on the reserve squad and moved all around the pitch, but no matter what's been done, Maurice, 27, hasn't produced: he has scored only two professional goals in six seasons.

Maybe PSG should let Maurice play his League 1 games in a Haitian National Team jersey, because he's had no problem scoring for Les Grenadiers.

Maurice's two goals lifted Haiti to a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Friday in the second game of Group B play in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Gold Cup at Sun Life Stadium, continuing the island nation's stellar form of late.

The two goals gave Maurice 11 in 14 international games for his country, and put previously winless Haiti (1-1, three points) in position to advance to the tournament's knockout stage.

Maurice was Johnny-, or rather Jean-on-the spot, in the must-win game, netting two sitters, gifted by both Haiti's strong attacking play and Trinidad and Tobago's shoddy defense.

The first goal, a 16th-minute tap-in, was created by a whistling shot from 35 yards out by Haiti midfielder Jeff Louis.

Ovince St. Preux vs. Cody Donovan set for UFC on Fox Sports 1 in Boston

Yes, the UFC has finally decided on a name for these cards. Instead of the silly numbering system with 1's and 2's and 3's, they're just going to call each event on Fox Sports "UFC Fight Night". This is what they called their events when they were on Spike before. It's unclear if they'll start up where they left off before (ie. this would be UFC Fight Night 26), or whether they're ditching numbers altogether. We'll have to see.

Anyway, the first card on Fox Sports takes place on August 17th, and it's awesome. The six-fight main card is amazing for a free show, and the prelims are pretty nice too. The entire main card and four of the preliminary card fights will air on Fox Sports 1 in a huge five-hour broadcast. A few fights will also be streamed on Facebook. The main event will see former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua take on Chael Sonnen. The co-main is a heavyweight scrap between former K-1 and Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem and Travis Browne. Other notable fighters on the main card include Urijah Faber, Uriah Hall, and Joe Lauzon.

Maxime Fortunus signs 2 year extension with Texas Stars

The Texas Stars announced Monday that the club has signed Haitian defenseman Maxime Fortunus to a two-year American Hockey League contract through the 2014-15 season.

Fortunus, 29, is an original member of the Texas Stars, having played all four years of the franchise's existence. The La Prairie, Que., native was selected as the Stars' third captain in team history in 2012-13 and had 28 points (seven goals, 21 assists) and 16 penalty minutes in 67 regular-season games, helping the Stars to their first division championship. Fortunus also appeared in all nine Calder Cup Playoff games for Texas, registering one assist.

Undrafted out of the QMJHL, Fortunus has played in 699 career professional games over the course of his 10 pro seasons, including 568 games in the AHL where he has totaled 49 goals and 131 assists for 180 points with Houston (2003-05), Manitoba (2005-09) and Texas (2010-13). Fortunus has also appeared in 94 AHL playoff games -- tied for 18th all-time -- and reached the Calder Cup Finals in 2009 and 2010.

Fortunus has played in eight career NHL games, all with Dallas in 2009-10.

In Cedar Park, Fortunus has appeared in 272 career regular-season games for Texas, which is the most of any defenseman in team history and fourth overall. He leads the franchise among defenseman in almost every offensive category: goals (29), assists (76), points (105), power-play goals (11), power-play assists (31) and shots (410). Fortunus ranks fourth overall in club history in assists and points, fifth in shots, ninth in goals and 13th in penalty minutes. He is one of only three players, along with Colton Sceviour and Francis Wathier, to play in all 39 Calder Cup Playoff games in Texas Stars history.

Pelicans trade draft pick Nerlens Noel to 76ers

METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- The Pelicans have acquired Philadelphia All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday in a trade that sent Thursday night's sixth overall draft choice, Nerlens Noel, to the 76ers, said a person familiar with the situation.

New Orleans also sent the 76ers a protected 2014 first-round pick and received the Sixers' second-round selection - 42nd overall - in this year's draft, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced. New Orleans would retain its 2014 first-round selection only if it falls in the top five.

The 6-foot-4 Holiday, a four-year pro, averaged 17.7 points and eight assists for the 76ers last season, when he also agreed to a four-year extension worth about $41 million.
Noel, who is 6-10, averaged 10.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game, and blocked 106 shots as a freshman. Although left knee surgery is expected to sideline him until December, he was still widely considered to be a strong candidate by draft analysts to be taken as high as first overall. Instead, he surprisingly fell out of the top five after Cleveland, Orlando, Washington, Charlotte and Phoenix all passed on him. That allowed New Orleans to take him and deal him almost immediately to the Sixers.

Peterson Joseph and Mechack Jerome return with confidence after strong performances with Haiti

The matches might have been friendlies, but the opposition for Peterson Joseph, Mechack Jerome and their countrymen was some of the stiffest in the world.

The two Haitian internationals, who play in the midfield and at right back respectively for Sporting Kansas City, both saw duty for Les Grenadiers as they tuned up for Gold Cup play with a pair of friendlies against Confederations Cup squads Spain and Italy.

Haiti hung tough against Spain's defending World Cup and UEFA champions, losing 2-1 in Miami, and drew the Azzurri 2-2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“When you play against those top players, you get a different sense of their mentality,” Joseph told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. “They're very professional. It was very good for me to play against them.”

Jerome also said he was glad for the opportunity to take on the two European powers.

“Those are two of the best teams in the world,” he said. “It was a good experience for me, and now I can come back and help out my team here.”

Haiti's strong showings in the friendlies should give Jerome and Joseph a lift in club play, Sporting manager Peter Vermes said.

Featuring the author Christopher J. Coyne, F. A. Harper Professor of Economics, George Mason University; with comments by M. Peter McPherson, Former Administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development, 1981--1987; moderated by Malou Innocent, Foreign Policy Analyst, Cato Institute.

A common argument for intervening abroad is to alleviate potential or existing human suffering. Repeatedly, however, state-led humanitarian efforts have failed miserably. Why do well-funded, expertly staffed, and well-intentioned humanitarian actions often fall short of achieving their desired outcomes, leaving some of the people they intended to help worse off? Why are well-meaning countries unable to replicate individual instances of success consistently across cases of human suffering?

Using the tools of economics, Dr. Christopher Coyne's new book, Doing Bad by Doing Good: Why Humanitarian Action Fails, shifts the discussion from the moral imperative of how governments should behave to a positive analysis of how they actually do. Coyne examines the limits of short-term humanitarian aid and long-term development assistance, the disconnect between intentions and reality, and why economic freedom—protection of property rights, private means of production, and free trade of labor and goods—provides the best means for minimizing human suffering.

U.S. backed Chadian dictator Hissène Habré faces war crimes trial in historic win for his victims

Known as "Africa’s Pinochet," the former dictator of Chad, Hissène Habré, has been detained in Senegal. Habré is expected to face charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes for systematic torture and the killings of tens of thousands of opponents during his eight years in power in the 1980s. If the case proceeds, he will eventually stand trial in a special court established in Senegal after a 22-year campaign led by his victims. Habré would be the first African leader to be tried for atrocities in Africa instead of in an international tribunal. We discuss the case with attorney Reed Brody of Human Rights Watch, who has worked with victims of Habré’s regime since 1999. Brody discusses Habré’s arrest in the context of the recent prosecution of two other U.S.-backed dictators: Jean-Claude Duvalier of Haiti and Efraín Ríos Montt in Guatemala.

Nerlens Noel selected 6th by New Orleans in 2013 NBA Draft

It was a dazzling moment when 19-year-old Nerlens Noel’s name was called tonight as the 6th draftee during the NBA Annual Draft. His parents were there on force to witness, like the rest of the world, this historic moment. The pick was made by the New Orleans Pelicans which quickly traded him with Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for guard Jrue Holiday.

Noel is the son of Haitian immigrants who lived in Everett, Massachusetts, where he was born. He is reportedly to be a star to be reckoned with. He played one season at the University of Kentucky. His position on the court is power forward and center. He was one of the top high school basketball players in the class of 2012. Nerlens Noel is very popular for his trademark hi-top fade hairstyle. Along with Samuel Dalambert and Blake Griffin, Noel has just joined a long list of Haitians, sons of immigrants, to leave their marks in professional sports in the United States. It’s a night for all Haitians to feel truly proud.

Academy of Motion Picture invites Raoul Peck to join its Board of Directors

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the names of 276 new members invited to join as the class of 2013 (100 more than were invited last year).
Noteworthy names on the list that you should immediately recognize include: Ava DuVernay, Chris Tucker, Kimberly Elise, Paula Patton, Prince, Raoul Peck, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Roger Ross Williams, Stanley Nelson, Steve McQueen, Tim Story, Tina Gordon Chism, and William Greaves.

There might be a few others whose names I don't recognize, especially in categories like Costume Designers, Makeup Artists, Sound, Visual Effects, and more.

But congrats to all! I'm especially surprised, but also pleased to see Raoul Peck's name on the list.

I'm even more surprised that William Greaves wasn't already a member. The man's been working in the business (primarily as a documentary filmmaker) for 50 or so years.

Interview: Maxwell talks new 'SUMMERS' album on BILLBOARD

It's been nearly four years to the day that Maxwell released "BLACKsummers'night" on July 7, 2009, the first in a planned trilogy of albums that, in custom Maxwell fashion, has taken some time to follow up. But in an interview with Billboard before his headlining set at the Essence Festival in New Orleans Friday (July 5), the singer said "SUMMERS’" (or "blackSUMMERS'night" as it will likely be titled) is being prepped for a late summer/early fall release — finally.

"The album's pretty much about the last day of summer, so I felt like it was a good idea to release it at the end of the summer," says Maxwell, who turned 40 in May. "It has that bittersweet feel to it. I don’t like things to be too happy. It's when you go back to school, summer’s over then you kind of have that wonderful week where you get crazy. That's what the essence of the record is."

Interview: Maxwell talks duets album with Alicia Keys on EBONY

This is your third time performing at Essence, and your first in support of your upcoming album SUMMERS. Will you perform any new material?
Just Gods, that was the only thing I had the time to rehearse just because of logistics. But it makes sense – it’s a huge festival and it’s the first day, right? And we're starting it and it’s amazing. It s unbelievable to be a headliner and it’s a shock to me that it even still happens. I'm amazed by it because I don’t necessarily go out of my way to make records for people, for radio and all that. I've been working with Alicia [Keys], we toured together and she was an opening act for me, and she was a labelmate. Thank God she ended where she wound up going.

And you've recently indicated that Fire We Make might not be the last duet between you two. What else might we expect?

We're definitely working on an EP that’s sort of Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrrell. We got a thing musically. That’s like my little sister. What’s funny is Swizz [Beatz, Keys' husband] is the champion of all of it. He's like, "You guys have a thing when you make music together. We had s really successful tour together when she first came on the scene and she's like family. She's someone that I trust. I'm like that, by the way. Most of the people you see me working for me are actually with me. And I’m proud to say that I’ve known them for 20 years almost. I've written songs with, produced songs with them a lot of times. I don’t deviate form my comfort zone. I feel like when God brings people to you it’s good to keep ‘em around. Not to say I haven't cut a few fools off [laughs], but for the essential I keep it close.

Jason DeRulo reveals Jordin Sparks' relationship rules

Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo are currently R&B's sweetest celebrity couple and the pair are still going strong after more than a year of dating.
The two officially made their romance known in January 2012, around the same time that Jason sustained a neck injury, which required a recovery time of about seven months.

During that time, Jordin and Jason were brought even closer together and now? They're practically inseparable. In fact, it's one of the rules that keeps their relationship intact.

"We actually have a two week rule," Jason told Hollyscoop. "We don't let two weeks pass without seeing each other."

It's a rule that keeps the spark alive and since they've been together, they haven't broken it once. "Since we have been together, it's been pretty strong," he said. "If I am in Europe [touring], she comes to see me."

Basically, if you want to be with someone, be with them. Sounds simple enough, right?

Haiti's Gold Cup return ruined by Honduras

NEW JERSEY, United States (CMC) — Honduras ruined Haiti's return to the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament by winning their Group B opener 2-0 at the Red Bull Arena on Monday night.

Goals in the first and second halves by Ronny Martinez and Marvin Chavez ensured victory, as Honduras stormed to top of the group with full points.

Honduras opened the scoring in the fourth minute thanks to Martinez's thumping strike after Haiti lost possession in their defensive half, and Mario Martinez set up his namesake.

Honduras wrapped up victory in the 78th minute when Brayan Beckeles passed to Chavez, who slid the ball under Haiti goalkeeper Frandy Montrevil.

While Haiti had the edge in possession and took 17 shots to six, they were unable to break open Honduras' defence.

The Haitians have not won since December 2012, having lost six of their seven matches this year.

Pierre Garçon gives football uniforms to three local high schools

When Springbrook Athletic Director Rob Wendel got a phone call recently about new uniforms for the Blue Devils football team, he asked his football coach, Adam Bahr, what this was all about. Bahr wasn’t quite sure.

“I said ‘I guess it could have been this contest we entered,’ ” Bahr recalled late last week. “Honestly, I had forgotten all about it.”

Bahr’s guess turned out to be correct. The Montgomery County school was chosen as the Maryland winner of a contest sponsored by Pierre Garcon, a contest that received virtually no fanfare. The Redskins receiver — working with Russell Athletic, one of his sponsors – announced online that he would personally provide 150 new football uniforms to one high school each in Virginia, Maryland and the District. The winners would be chosen via Facebook votes.

Bahr had gone to Springbrook himself, and one of his friends from high school suggested he launch an effort to win the prize. But neither he nor his assistants tracked the voting or mounted a coordinated campaign. and now, suddenly, their school’s worn-out uniforms would be obsolete.

“What it means for our program, it’s unbelievable,” said Bahr a longtime assistant who just completed his first year as the school’s head coach. “Our football budget and our athletic budget – like many other schools in the area, I’m sure – are just strapped for cash. It’s an unbelievable gift and gesture, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

The reaction was similar across the Potomac in Fairfax County, where Thomas Jefferson Director of Student Activities Shawn DeRose hadn’t even heard of this contest. Social-media savvy students there decided to push for the prize; DeRose knew nothing until receiving a call saying the Colonials had been chosen.

Maxwell performs at ESSENCE Music Festival 2013

Haitian r&b artist Maxwell made a triumphant return to the stage at the ESSENCE Music Festival on Friday. The soul crooner proved he knew exactly how to win over the ladies with his seductive moves, silky falsetto and timeless style.

As many were hoping for the glimpse of new music from his latest album, fans can get ready, as Maxwell previewed his oft-delayed album ‘blackSUMMERSnight,’ with “Gods,” a single he previewed on his SoundCloud page in January. “This is a song that will be on my next album, which will be out one of these days,” the singer teased.

In an interview with Billboard, Maxwell said the album was being prepped for a late summer/early fall release, and would feature a more “hi-fi” sound compared to 2009′s ‘BLACKsummers’night, which was a throwback to 70′s soul. Maxwell surprised with an acrobatic back-bend to perform alongside a video of Alicia Keys during “Fire We Make.”Look for more from Maxwell and Alicia Keys in the near future — Maxwell teased an upcoming duets EP with Keys in the vein of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. New Jeep Cherokee could get SRT treatment

To some, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT has always seemed like a misfit in the rugged, off-road oriented SUV family, but when you grip the thick-rimmed steering wheel and fire up the bellowing high-output Hemi, it all makes sense. And the Grand Cherokee may not be the only SRT-massaged Jeep in the lineup for long. Chrysler Group enthusiast website Allpar, which correctly predicted the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 in the Ram HD trucks for 2014, is claiming an SRT-tuned version of the new Jeep Cherokee is in the works.

On the surface, the claim seems far-fetched, but upon more careful consideration, the picture comes together. Based on the CUSW platform which underpins the Dodge Dart, the Cherokee's unibody, car-based platform would naturally lend itself to a street-performance oriented package.

Unlike the Grand Cherokee SRT, which relies on good old-fashioned American cubic inches, the engine and powertrain reportedly under consideration for the Cherokee SRT is a turbocharged V-6. Two versions are reportedly in development, a 375-hp 3.0-liter single-turbo and a 410-hp twin-turbo. Both would represent a more than 100-hp gain over the Cherokee's current top engine offering, a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated Pentastar V-6. Manual fans likely need not apply, as the transmission is expected to be a nine-speed automatic like the rest of the Cherokee line.
