Adonis Stevenson vs Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th at Bell Centre, Montreal, Canada
By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 15 KO’s) will be defending his title against #1 WBC Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) on May 24th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The fight isn’t the one that fans want to see, as they prefer to see Stevenson face WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev or IBF champion Bernard Hopkins. But it looks like Stevenson isn’t in a hurry to take the fight against Kovalev, so it could be a year or more before that fight takes place, if ever.
Stevenson makes good money just defending his titles against guys like Fonfara and Tony Bellew, and it’s not as important for him to take on a dangerous opponent that could potentially send him back into the contender ranks where the money is less.
The Stevenson-Fonfara fight could be shown on Showtime rather than HBO, which is good for a lot of fans who already have that cable network. For fans who don’t have Showtime, I’m not sure that a Stevenson v. Fonfara bout is a big enough one for them to subscribe to Showtime. The fight is more of a stay busy mismatch for Stevenson along the same lines as his recent slaughter of Tony Bellew last November.
This will be Stevenson’s third title defense of his World Boxing Council 175lb title he captured last year in June in halting Chad Dawson in the 1st round. In his first defense, Stevenson destroyed former IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud by a 7th round TKO win last year in September. Following that win, Stevenson defeated Bellew by a 6th round TKO.

Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev go to media war, but will fight happen?
Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev are kicking up some dust in the media, but will they actually fight?
Light heavyweight titleholders Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson are on a fantasy collision course that may eventually become reality. Or not. The two fighters both have interim bouts right now, with Kovalev facing Cedric Agnew on March 29, and Stevenson taking on Andrzej Fonfara on May 24.
Sergey Kovalev:
"Right now I have my match against Cedric Agnew, and that's the only thing I'm focusing on. And Stevenson, I can only say that if he refuses to fight with me [after I beat Agnew], then he is a coward and not a world champion."

Top Canada boxers Pascal, Stevenson, Stiverne, Jean have Haitian connection
MONTREAL - Four fighters who represent the elite of Canadian pro boxing have one thing in common — all of them were born in Haiti.
With the top rank of the Canadian fight game now centred almost entirely in Quebec, it is that province's largest source of immigrants that has produced most of its recent boxing champions.
Adonis Stevenson is the reigning WBC light heavyweight champion, a title previously held by Jean Pascal, who will face Romanian-born Lucian Bute before an expected crowd of 20,000 in a non-title bout Saturday at the Bell Centre.
Dierry Jean is to face Lamont Peterson for the IBF light welterweight title on Jan. 25 in Washington, D.C., while Birmane Stiverne is waiting for a date and site to be announced for his clash with Chris Arreola for the WBC heavyweight title recently vacated by Vitali Klitschko.
All four were born in Haiti and moved with their families as young children to Montreal, where they took up boxing and were developed into world class fighters.
"Maybe their community was not high on hockey and other sports and was more focused on boxing," fight promoter Yvon Michel said Tuesday. "So we were privileged to get the people with the best genes for fighting.

The Burden of Adonis Stevenson: Money is on his mind but Kovalev is in his face
It’s good to be Adonis Stevenson these days. The Montreal hitter went from being an underground curiosity to the lineal light heavyweight champion of the world in a matter of a year. Stevenson also has the good fortune of being from a boxing crazy city, which means that he has the celebrity status and appreciation that eludes most American champions. However, success is not without its problems. At the ripe old age of 36 and with growing pressure from fans and media to take on the dangerous Sergey Kovalev, his next move will undergo the full scrutiny of the often irrational and sadistic boxing public.
The most obvious and desired opponent for Stevenson and the option that HBO clearly favors is Sergey Kovalev. The matchup is a sure-fire slugfest that pits two of the hardest punchers in boxing against one another. It also presents an interesting style contrast: Stevenson clearly possesses the edge in speed, athleticism, and defense with Kovalev appearing to be the physically stronger and more resilient of the two. They seem to have relatively equal punching power but they go about getting the knockout in vastly different ways. Stevenson is an explosive counter puncher and Kovalev is a come foreword assassin. It’s almost impossible to predict anything in this fight except for a knockout.

Kovalev fight will be part of new HBO deal, says Adonis Stevenson
WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson had a whirlwind 2013. He started the year off by avenging his only career loss by stopping Darnell Boone. He followed that up with three more knockout victories, picking up the WBC strap in the process.
BoxingScene.com recognized his accomplishments by naming him our "Fighter of The Year." The Quebec native said that he is very proud of what he achieved and that he plans on making this year even more successful.
"It feels good. I am proud that BoxingScene gave me this honor. I worked hard for it. I appreciate them for recognizing the work I did. I plan to come back and work even harder and have a better 2014."

Adonis Stevenson says he'll fight Sergey Kovalev in 2014
The fight that everyone wants to see at 175 pounds just might happen this year, as Adonis Stevenson says Sergey Kovalev is on his 2014 hit list.
Though he still has his mind on Bernard Hopkins (who is unlikely) and Carl Froch (who has flat-out said he's not interested in the fight or in going up to 175), Adonis Stevenson tells BoxingScene.com that he's definitely planning to fight Sergey Kovalev this year, and given the options otherwise, it may be a more forced issue than he's expecting.

Superman reigns supreme: Adonis Stevenson is FightFan.com’s 2013 Fighter of the Year
Adonis Stevenson is FightFan.com’s 2013 “Fighter of the Year”!
Ace Freeman: Adonis Stevenson
As far as I’m concerned there was only one clear cut choice for 2013′s “Fighter of the Year”, and that’s Canada’s Adonis Stevenson. Sure, some other great fighters had good years, but this was a whole other level. Stevenson went 4-0 (4 KOs) in 2013. He started with avenging his only career defeat by devastating knockout when he iced Darnell Boone in March. Just three months later, in his second fight at light heavyweight, he captured the linear and undisputed 175-pound title by one-punch knockout over then reigning champion Chad Dawson. He followed up that impressive feat with with a one sided drubbing of top contender Tavoris Cloud in September, and just two months later obliterated his WBC mandatory challenger Tony Bellew in six rounds. This was a banner year for Adonis Stevenson who stood clearly ahead of the pack in 2013.
Joe Bruiser: Adonis Stevenson
There were several contenders for Fighter of the Year in 2013: Floyd Mayweather, Timothy Bradley, Danny Garcia, Sergey Kovalev, Guillermo Rigondeaux and even Marcos Maidana, but in my opinion Stevenson all but had this award wrapped up by September with the statement he made via his shellacking of durable, former champion Tavoris Cloud. It was the first of two 2013 defenses he would make of the light heavyweight title that he had ripped from the clutches of Chad Dawson only three months earlier. Stevenson fought four times in 2013, avenging the only loss of his career against Darnell Boone in March, flattening the true light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in June, destroying Cloud in a very one-sided defense three months after that, and then stopping his mandatory challenger in Tony Bellew only two months after that. Four knockout victories while garnering and defending the light heavyweight championship of the world makes Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson my 2013 Fighter of the Year.

Knockout of the Year: Adonis Stevenson KO 1 Chad Dawson
Every sport has its acts of ownage. The slam dunk, the home run, the ace serve, the bull goring the matador – all very satisfying. Even better is when these moments of unleashing bring victory.
For boxing, that act is of course the knockout, and no amount of scolding fans for their underappreciation of technique will change the fact that seeing a fighter hit the canvas causes involuntary cheers to fill the TV room, arena, or wherever.
When it comes to naming the best, 2013 didn't have anything quite as scary as recent years: Paul Williams' face-plant courtesy of Sergio Martinez; Fernando Montiel on his back, climbing an invisible ladder after a left hook from Nonito Donaire; or Juan Manuel Marquez's punch that left Manny Pacquiao unconscious for so long that trainer Freddie Roach later admitted he'd wondered, "Is he dead?" All were selected by an overwhelming percentage of readers.
altThis past year's KOs, though, had both high drama and significance, and in the end it came down to two main choices.

Adonis Stevenson named SI.com Fighter of the Year 2013
NEW YORK -- A boxer's career is finite. It rarely ages well, and for some it can end in tragedy. Recent stars such as Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley and Roy Jones have fought deep into their 30's and 40's, but their days at the top of the sport ended years earlier. Oh, sure, there are exceptions. Bernard Hopkins is inching towards 50 with a light heavyweight title belt around his waist. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a few years from 40 and still considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
Time, though, catches up to most. The wear and tear of a brutal sport invariably takes its toll.
That is why it is so rare to see a star rise late in his career. In 2010, Sergio Martinez was tapped to face Kelly Pavlik, the middleweight kingpin, the rising face of American boxing. Back then, Martinez was a fringe junior middleweight contender toiling in relative obscurity. His previous fight had been a narrow decision loss to Paul Williams. Before that, a draw with Kermit Cintron. At 35, Martinez had spent most of his formative years fighting in small venues in Spain and Argentina, a largely anonymous talent.
