Sporting KC taking cautious approach with Peterson Joseph

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Peterson Joseph is still listed on Sporting Kansas City's active roster, but it's not clear when – or if – the midfielder nicknamed the “Haitian Xavi” will be able to suit up again.

“He's in a predicament,” manager Peter Vermes told reporters after Tuesday's training session. “He's got a health issue. We're still trying to deal with what it actually truly is. I don't want to go too deep into it right now, because we're still waiting on some tests.”

Some more tests, actually. This is the same issue that sidelined Joseph last fall, Vermes said, and compounding the problem is that doctors still aren't sure what's wrong.

“He's gone through a battery of tests here,” Vermes said. “He flew to New York for a battery of tests there, and now some other people are taking a look at him as well. Until that's sorted out, we will not take a chance regarding him and his health.”

The 23-year-old Haitian international has been with Sporting since September 2011. He made 23 MLS appearances with 14 starts last season, both career highs, but passed out in training in late October. He has not played or practiced since then, sitting out Sporting's run to the MLS Cup title.

Sporting KC rule Peterson Joseph out for MLS Cup

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Through their last three MLS playoff matches, Sporting Kansas City haven't had to make too many choices in the midfield. That's because a combination of injury, illness and Graham Zusi's return to the wing have left them with few bench options in the middle of the park.

Peterson Joseph and Mechack Jerome return with confidence after strong performances with Haiti

The matches might have been friendlies, but the opposition for Peterson Joseph, Mechack Jerome and their countrymen was some of the stiffest in the world.

The two Haitian internationals, who play in the midfield and at right back respectively for Sporting Kansas City, both saw duty for Les Grenadiers as they tuned up for Gold Cup play with a pair of friendlies against Confederations Cup squads Spain and Italy.

Haiti hung tough against Spain's defending World Cup and UEFA champions, losing 2-1 in Miami, and drew the Azzurri 2-2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“When you play against those top players, you get a different sense of their mentality,” Joseph told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. “They're very professional. It was very good for me to play against them.”

Jerome also said he was glad for the opportunity to take on the two European powers.

“Those are two of the best teams in the world,” he said. “It was a good experience for me, and now I can come back and help out my team here.”

Haiti's strong showings in the friendlies should give Jerome and Joseph a lift in club play, Sporting manager Peter Vermes said.

Mechack Jerome and Peterson Joseph selected to Haiti Men’s National Team

Sporting Kansas City defender Mechack Jerome and midfielder Peterson Joseph have been selected to the Haiti Men’s National Team, the club announced on Monday. Haiti will play a pair of international friendlies against the last two FIFA World Cup champions with matches against Spain on June 8 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. and against Italy on June 12 at Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jerome has appeared in seven games for Sporting Kansas City since being signed prior to the 2013 MLS season. The 23-year-old right back has contributed to four shutouts in five starts this season and added one assist.

He debuted for the Haiti Men’s National Team in 2008 and helped Haiti to a third place finish in the 2012 Caribbean Cup last December.

“I am very happy,” Jerome said. “These will be two big games against Spain and Italy. I’m excited to have the chance to play against Xavi, (Carlos) Puyol, (Andres) Iniesta and (Mario) Balotelli.”

Joseph, 23, has appeared in 23 MLS matches (including playoffs) over three seasons for Sporting Kansas City with one assist. Internationally, Joseph earned his first senior team appearance in a 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier and most recently represented Haiti in Caribbean Cup qualifying.
