When Haitian MMA fighter Yves Jabouin enters the Octagon at UFC 161, make sure to keep an eye on his hands. Jabouin has been putting extra focus in his boxing for Dustin Pague.
“As a fighter, I think I was becoming too much of a technical, outside fighter, and I kind of went away from what I did in the beginning, which was work on the inside,” said Jabouin to MMA Junkie. “I used to really work my hands and that’s when I had great success with knockout victories. I’m trying to reach back to that time and work my hands, my boxing, and really analyze my style overall.”
Since becoming a bantamweight, Jabouin has yet to utilize his hands to their fullest potential. He’s 3-1 with all the wins via decision.
At 1-3 and riding a pair of losses, Pague knows his job is likely on the line in this one.

Don King to start negotiations for Stiverne-Klitschko
Promoter Don Kim is meeting with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KO’s) and his mandatory challenger #1 WBC Bermane Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KO’s) in Ukraine to try and negotiate a fight between the two fighters, according to fightnews.com.
It’s going to be tough to try and put this fight together, but if anyone can it’s King. Vitali hasn’t fought since last September in beating Manuel Charr by a 4th round TKO in optional title defense.
The soon to be 42-year-old Vitali has kept the top contenders waiting in limbo wondering if he will retire to go off into politics in the Ukraine or if he’ll continue on with his career.
Even now it’s uncertain whether the Vitali-Stiverne fight will happen because Vitali’s manager Bernd Boente isn’t say it absolutely will. It depends on how the negotiations go.

Jennifer Abel sets personal best at senior diving nationals
Haitian Olympian Jennifer Abel set a personal best score and Philippe Gagne, a 15-year-old diver from Montreal, won the gold medal on the men's 10-metre tower on Sunday at the Summer Senior Nationals diving competition in Quebec.
The competition is also a selection event for the FINA World Championships July 19 to Aug. 4 in Barcelona and the World University Games in Kazan, Russia July 6-17.
On women's three-metre, Abel totalled 374.55 as she closed within 20 points of the Canadian record held by Blythe Hartley since 2008. Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., was second with an impressive 342.60 and Aimee Harrison of Winnipeg third at 290.65.
"I'm pleased with my day," said Abel with her sixth national crown. "I've had a really great season so far and I had confidence with all the work I've put into it."

Pierre Garçon says he doesn’t anticipate problems with injured shoulder
Haitian wide receiver Pierre Garcon said Thursday that his recovery from shoulder surgery for labrum damage is going well and he doesn’t anticipate experiencing any problems with the injury this season.
“The shoulder is good,” Garcon said following the Washington Redskins’ offseason practice at Redskins Park. “There shouldn’t be any worries for me for the season coming up. So it should be good to go.”
Garcon has not been participating in the practices, known as organized team activities. He said his shoulder injury occurred during the Redskins’ playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks and he described the surgery that he underwent as “just minor.”

Massive march signals resurrection of Aristide’s Lavalas movement
Well over 15,000 people poured out from all corners of Haiti’s capital to march alongside the cortege of cars that carried former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide back to his home in Tabarre from the Port-au-Prince courthouse he visited on May 8.
Thousands more massed along sidewalks and on rooftops to cheer the procession on, waving flags and wearing small photos of Aristide in their hair, pinned to their clothing, or stuck in their hats.
Led by Fanmi Lavalas party coordinator Maryse Narcisse through a gauntlet of jostling journalists, Aristide had entered the courthouse (the former Belle Époque Hotel) at exactly 9:00 a.m., the time of his appointment to testify before Investigating Judge Ivickel Dabrésil. Aristide had waited with Narcisse in a car outside the court’s backdoor for about 45 minutes. It was only the second time that Aristide had left his home (and the first time publicly) since returning to Haiti on Mar. 18, 2011 from a seven-year exile in Africa following the Feb. 29, 2004 Washington-backed coup d’état which cut short his second government.

Haiti’s Struggle for Freedom: US Imperialism, MINUSTAH and the Overthrow of Jean-Bertrand Aristide
Timothy Alexander Guzman, Silent Crow News - A former French colony called Saint-Domingue in the Western side of the Spanish Island of Hispaniola erupted into a Slave revolt against France. The revolt cost the lives of over 100,000 blacks and over 20,000 whites not including innocent civilians caught in the crosshairs of the revolution. The new Haitian Republic was born and won its independence from France in 1804. It became a free Republic that abolished slavery and became a center of inspiration for many African slaves across the world.
But since the Haitian Revolution and it’s resistance to slavery, Western nations has managed to keep Haiti enslaved. From Internal conflicts that divided Haiti to successive dictatorships and a constant fear against a French invasion in the decades that followed, Haiti has always experienced a struggle for freedom. When President Theodore Roosevelt introduced “The Roosevelt Corollary” in a 1904 address to the US congress in relation to the Monroe Doctrine, he mentioned the fact that the US will intervene on the side of Europe who was in constant war against their former colonial possessions in Latin America if any new conflict were to arise from that point on. In 1915, the US Marines lead by Major General Smedley Butler, occupied Haiti under the orders of US President Woodrow Wilson to protect US Corporations and to prevent a people’s revolution. The occupation lasted until 1934. Then after the US occupation ended, Haitians chose a national assembly and elected Sténio Joseph Vincent as President of Haiti with US approval turned out to be an Authoritarian President. And of course, the United States was its’ number one trading partner. Then followed President Élie Lescot who was ousted in a 1950 Coup by Army General Paul Eugene Magloire, another US approved presidency since he was anti-Communist. In 1957 Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier became President-For-Life, of course with US approval until 1971. Then his son Jean Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier became his successor until a popular revolt of the Haitian people in 1986 removed him from power. Under the Duvalier Dynasty, over 60,000 Haitians were killed and tortured by the Tonton Macoutes, a death squad created by “Papa Doc” who routinely used machetes and guns to murder his political opponents and anyone who spoke negatively against his regime. Many people were burned alive and hung in public. Top Members of the Tonton Macoutes were leaders of Voodoo which did earn them unlimited authority and the respect of the Haitian people. After Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier was removed from power, the Tonton Macoutes were still active in other death squads for years to come, many eventually ended up in the Front for the Advancement and Progress of Haïti (FRAPH), A creation of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Haiti’s relationship with the United States, France and Canada in the past decades is a contributing factor to the Haitian government’s failed political and economic policies that has had a negative impact on its people.

Brooklyn Borough Hall echoed with the festivities of the Haitian Flag Day awards ceremony last Friday. Organized by Councilman Jumaane Williams, the ceremony recognized seven Haitian and Haitian-Americans with five awards for their contributions to the community. Among the honorees were reporter Alisha Laventure, of News 12 Brooklyn, and NYPD Sgt. Herve Guiteau. Dancing and drumming from an East Flatbush-based cultural organization brought a slice of the country to the 165-year-old hall.

(CNN) -- Thirteen-year-old Rose Matrie lives in a cracked house.
The light that streams through the narrow slit in the concrete wall is an ever-present reminder of the earthquake that struck her home in Haiti in 2010 and devastated the already impoverished country. Still, Rose Matrie has big dreams for her future.
"I want to go to a big school in order to develop my talents," she says.
Her mother fastened a large chalkboard on the outside of their home to cover up the crack, and every day Rose Matrie does her homework there. Her teacher says she is very bright and excels in literature.
"When I let my imagination go, I think of extraordinary things," Rose Matrie says.
Her father lost his job after the earthquake, and though her mother works as a seamstress, there is little demand for her skills. Like many families in Haiti, her parents are struggling to pay the school fees to keep her and her five siblings enrolled.
In Haiti, public schools only meet about 20% of the demand for basic education in rural areas, and education costs, particularly for private schools, remain very high in relation to family income, according to the nonprofit Plan International USA.
Plan is working with local governments and schools to provide more children in Haiti with access to a quality education. The organization is building classrooms and school facilities, training educators and providing school supplies, textbooks and uniforms for children in need.
"[This is] so those costs aren't passed on to families as a barrier to attendance," explains Ann Wang, a plan communications specialist.
When the relatively high cost of school is decreased or eliminated, more children like Rose Matrie can get an education and develop their talents.

Creating one-off vehicles never gets old for the design team at SRT®. Recently the group unveiled a special 2013 SRT Viper GTS for the Sons of Italy Foundation®, destined to be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the group.
The SRT Viper GTS that was built specifically for the Sons of Italy Foundation features a tri-coat pearl white body dubbed Avorio Perla. One-off multi-spoke black vapor chrome wheels contrast the white body. While sketching possible themes for the car, the SRT design team not only looked at white as the body color, but also considered red and even yellow. Ultimately, the white pearl coat stood out above the rest as a truly unique look. Behind the GTS badge near the front wheels is a small tribute to the Italian colors.
“What’s cool about this white is that it has a lot of travel in the color,” said Mark Trostle, Head of SRT Design. “With it having some of this metallic pearl in it, it really shows off the shapes of the car very well. It catches a lot of light, especially on the hood. In the sunlight, it’s beautiful how it lights up. That’s one of the big pieces that makes the car unique.”

The SRT Viper GTS that was built specifically for the Sons of Italy Foundation features a tri-coat pearl white body dubbed Avorio Perla. One-off multi-spoke black vapor chrome wheels contrast the white body. While sketching possible themes for the car, the SRT design team not only looked at white as the body color, but also considered red and even yellow. Ultimately, the white pearl coat stood out above the rest as a truly unique look. Behind the GTS badge near the front wheels is a small tribute to the Italian colors.
“What’s cool about this white is that it has a lot of travel in the color,” said Mark Trostle, Head of SRT Design. “With it having some of this metallic pearl in it, it really shows off the shapes of the car very well. It catches a lot of light, especially on the hood. In the sunlight, it’s beautiful how it lights up. That’s one of the big pieces that makes the car unique.”

Jean-Bertrand Aristide says hunger Haiti’s biggest problem
PORT-AU-PRINCE — Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide recently emerged from months of seclusion for a second straight day and took several swipes at the current government. Speaking to a small group of mostly Haitian reporters and The Associated Press at his home in the capital May 9, Aristide covered topics ranging from his shock at seeing the devastation caused by the 2010 earthquake to his political party’s strength as the country heads to legislative and local elections.
He also thanked the thousands of supporters who cheered his motorcade a day earlier during a rare outing to answer a judge’s questions in a closed-door testimony in the case of a slain journalist. The crowds comprised one of the biggest demonstrations of its kind in years despite a police ban on all protests.
Aristide then took a few jabs at President Michel Martelly, saying the government has not done enough to address hunger and he referred to the administration’s tax on international calls and money transfers to fund an education program as a “problem.”
“With all the respect that I have for the authorities in place, they are not able to solve the hunger problem by themselves,” Aristide said in the office of his residence, calling hunger one of Haiti’s “biggest problems.’’

Obama opposition to TRIPS exemption for Haiti to increase the price of life-saving medicine
WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is seeking to curb efforts to exempt the world's poorest countries from expansive trade rules that would substantially increase the price of life-saving medicine and other products.
The regulations would extend intellectual property rules currently used in developed countries to a few dozen nations currently classified by the United Nations as "Least Developed Countries" (LDCs), including Haiti, Bangladesh, Rwanda, Somalia, Chad and several other nations in sub-Saharan Africa. Because many of the nations classified as least developed exhibit very high rates of HIV and AIDS, the proposed rules have raised concerns among human rights advocates who note that higher drug prices will result in lower treatment levels.
Worldwide, less than 50 percent of HIV-positive adults currently receive treatment, while less than 25 percent of HIV-positive children do, according to the U.N. Global Commission on HIV and the Law. Nearly one-third of all HIV positive people live in LDCs, according to UNAIDS.
"There are many reasons for this [HIV] treatment gap. But a major one is the result of recent bilateral and multilateral trade agreements that have undoubtedly increased the power of pharmaceutical patent holders to control the prices of drugs on global markets. Governments, especially in low- and middle-income countries, cannot afford them," wrote the U.N. Global Commission in July 2012.

The Haitian Hillbilly is Miami's unlikely DJ link to the Island of Haiti
Spearheading much of mainland Miami nightlife's response to the tragedy in Haiti is a man known as the Haitian Hillbilly. Not only did this proud hipster redneck — born Alain Maximilien — spend many of his formative years in the island nation, but also his father runs La Maison des Anges, a 120-child orphanage just outside Port-au-Prince. And while everyone on-site survived the quake, the structure itself did not fare as well. Children and staff are all living in tents set up on the orphanage's grounds. That's the good news. The bad news is that Maximilien lost a half-brother.
But, as one might suspect, this is not Maximilien's first rodeo in that perennially crippled country. He has been involved periodically with (and remains a staunch advocate of) Project Medishare, a University of Miami School of Medicine group that has provided health care to the Haitian hinterlands since 1994. And his persona was actually born on the island, after a chat in a Port-au-Prince bar led to a spot on Radio NBC.
But, as one might suspect, this is not Maximilien's first rodeo in that perennially crippled country. He has been involved periodically with (and remains a staunch advocate of) Project Medishare, a University of Miami School of Medicine group that has provided health care to the Haitian hinterlands since 1994. Mechack Jerome and Peterson Joseph selected to Haiti Men’s National Team
Sporting Kansas City defender Mechack Jerome and midfielder Peterson Joseph have been selected to the Haiti Men’s National Team, the club announced on Monday. Haiti will play a pair of international friendlies against the last two FIFA World Cup champions with matches against Spain on June 8 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. and against Italy on June 12 at Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Jerome has appeared in seven games for Sporting Kansas City since being signed prior to the 2013 MLS season. The 23-year-old right back has contributed to four shutouts in five starts this season and added one assist.
He debuted for the Haiti Men’s National Team in 2008 and helped Haiti to a third place finish in the 2012 Caribbean Cup last December.
“I am very happy,” Jerome said. “These will be two big games against Spain and Italy. I’m excited to have the chance to play against Xavi, (Carlos) Puyol, (Andres) Iniesta and (Mario) Balotelli.”

He Zi and Han Wang of China were the winners with 324.90 points edging the Canadians who posted 313.86. Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape of Italy were third at 302.40.
On women’s 10-metre synchro, Yajie Si and Huixia Liu of China won gold with 336.54 points. Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Mun Yee Leong of Malaysia were second at 308.82 and Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow of Britain were third at 304.28.
Olympic bronze medallists Roseline Filion of Laval and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal were fourth at 302.52. They were second at the two first stops on the circuit.

NDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (29-12) plated a season-high 14 runs on 14 hits as left fielder Felix Pie went 4-for-4 with two triples and two steals, right fielder Brett Carroll blasted two, two-run home runs and first baseman Matt Hague went 3-for-4 with three RBI in a 14-7 drubbing of the Buffalo Bisons (23-15) on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
One day after plating 10 runs on a season-high 15 hits, the Indianapolis offense continued right where they left off with 14 runs on a season-high nine extra-base hits. Overall, six Indians' batters scored at least two runs, while five collected at least two RBI and four knocked multiple hits.
The Tribe quickly jumped on Buffalo starter Dave Bush as Pie roped a one-out single, stole second and came plateward when Hague ripped a base hit. 3B Jared Goedert then continued the first frame outburst with a run-scoring double, before Carroll cleared the bases with a mammoth home run to left to extend the Indians lead to to 4-0.

Antonio Cromartie to cover Jets’ opponents top receivers
When the Jets took Dee Milliner with the ninth overall draft pick, the common belief was that the Alabama cornerback would be the immediate replacement for Darrelle Revis. Technically, Antonio Cromartie filled that role last year and will continue to mark the Jets’ opponents top receiver this year, but Milliner was assumed to be the starting cornerback alongside him. Not so fast, said defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman on a conference call Wednesday with season ticket holders.
“We feel like he’ll come in and compete with the others, and may the best man win,” Thurman said. We’re always about competition here, you’ve got to go out and you got to compete and you’ve got to earn the job.”
Milliner has yet to hit the field as he rehabs from shoulder surgery. Instead, he was on the sidelines riding the bike and going through rehab with trainers during rookie minicamp.
“If he earns the job, great, if he doesn’t, it just means that someone else stepped up and performed at a high level throughout OTAs, minicamp and training camp,” the coordinator said. “We’re going to play the best guys, no matter where they were drafted.”
It's worth keeping in mind, however, that if the Jets had thought highly of Kyle Wilson, they probably wouldn't have considered a cornerback with the ninth overall pick.

Haitian director Jerry LaMothe has crafted a distinguished career as a filmmaker that can speak for the unspoken, most notably for the people 'around the way' like in his home neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn, while still maintaining an entertaining and clear vision of how he sees the world. We caught up with him in advance of this Thursday's anniversary screening of his debut film AMOUR INFINITY that takes place at New York's own MIST Harlem at 4pm and 8pm, to chat about what it took to make his first film and what keeps him going.
