Interview: Leyla McCalla talks Haiti, Langston Hughes, Vari-Colored Songs on the Mimi Geerges Show

A few years ago, Leyla McCalla decided to move to New Orleans. She began playing Bach on her cello on the streets to support herself. As a New Yorker of Haitian decent, her music mixes influences of Jazz, Blues and Haitian Creole. In her debut solo album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, she puts the poetry of Hughes to music, and includes Haitian folk songs, and some of her own pieces as well. She plays "Heart of Gold" and "Mesi Bondye" in studio.
