Video: Aaron Russo's America: Freedom to Fascism (2006 Documentary)

America: Freedom to Fascism is a 2006 film by Aaron Russo, which alleges among a variety of claims that income tax is illegal.

This documentary covers many subjects, including: the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the income tax, Federal Reserve System, national ID cards (REAL ID Act), human-implanted RFID tags (Spychips), Diebold electronic voting machines, globalization, Big Brother, taser weapons abuse, and the alleged use of terrorism by government as a means to diminish the citizens’ rights.

The film’s claims about the illegality of the income tax in the United States have been critiqued as factually incorrect by some reviewers. The film has, however, developed a strong following.

Video: Rick Rozoff - NATO, Ukraine and U.S. imperialism

Rick Rozoff, internationally recognized critic of NATO, spoke on April 12, 2014 at a Chicago teach-in titled "Stop U.S./NATO's New Cold War Over Ukraine."

He described the geo-political background to the current crisis resulting from the recent right-wing coup of the Kiev government in Ukraine and U.S./NATO saber-rattling. The key to understanding the present situation is to look at the historically aggressive objectives of NATO.

"The Ukrainian crisis is simply the pretext for the U.S. and its NATO allies of moving more military equipment up to the Russian border...to besiege (it). And there's only one reason you besiege a country -- either to starve it out or to attack it. And nothing less severe is at stake right now."

Rozoff also noted the presence of the warship USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea -- and which has as of this writing been reported on corporate media, with cued vexation, as having been buzzed by a Russian fighter jet. "It's the third guided missile warship from the United States to go into the Black Sea since the crisis in the Ukraine. There is a convention in 1936 called the Montreux Convention that expressly prohibits war ships of a certain size or larger to go into the Black Sea or to stay there over a limited period of time. The U.S. is in clear violation of that Convention and Russian political figures have notified them of that."

"There is no way of exaggerating the severity of what we're facing right now." Rozoff warns. "I applaud everyone's efforts in building an anti-war movement. It has never been more necessary than it is right now."

This video of Rozoff's talk is enhanced with images assembled in a PowerPoint created by Sara Flounders (International Action Center/NY), plus additional photos and footage.

Video: Stealing Popcorn (2009 Documentary)

“Stealing Popcorn” started when director Brett Allen came across a list of the 10 Most Corrupt leaders in the world. What fascinated him was that Number 8 on that list Pavlo Lazarenko a former Ukrainian Prime Minister was at that time being tried in San Fransisco court room on allegations of corruption, embezzlement of funds and money laundering. He was the first former foreign official who was prosecuted in US court. Brett started digging deeper and came across a whole web of corruption involving top Ukrainian officials in power even now. He asked himself a question: Why the new emerging capitalist societies which appeared on the post-Soviet platform acquired the worst characteristics the contemporary capitalism has to offer: social egoism and corruption of the ruling elite? Being inspired by Michael Moore’s “Capitalism. A Love story” and the investigative urge he decided to explore the part of the world a lot of us Americans don’t even know where it is on the map.

The documentary team came across a lot of facts, documents and opinions related to the case, ultimately it all came down to presenting those in a clear understandable narrative people would be able to follow. As Don, one of the interviewees says: “people are sheep”. They are fed “popcorn” every single day of their lives, by politicians, transnational corporations, big businesses, entertainment industry, marketing and advertising. The movie didn’t attempt to change the world as it is,it just wanted to present a “cool” image of what happens to the naïve sheep.

So why do we still follow the bad leaders, why do we eat that political popcorn?

This documentary is just the beginning. The filmmakers have a lot of directions to go from here, and as Brett Allen was saying: “it only just started and I’m hooked”.

CITIZEN KOCH investigates the impact of unlimited, anonymous spending by corporations and billionaires on the electoral process, featuring stories of life-long Republicans whose loyalty is tested when their families become collateral damage in the GOP fight to take organized labor out at the knees. Alternately terrifying and funny, CITIZEN KOCH is an essential and powerful portrait of our political times.

Video: Carnaval des Fleurs (Carnival of Flowers) 2014 attracts tourists to Haiti - RT Ruptly

Tens of thousands of people danced through the streets in colourful flower themed costumes in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince for the annual Carnaval des Fleurs (Carnival of Flowers), Sunday.

The three day festival, which includes musical performances, giant floats, masquerade groups and theatrical performance on the streets, was turned from an annual event into a biannual one when President Michel Martelly took office in 2011.

Martelly revived the festival to attract tourists and ultimately bolster the Haitian economy and improve Haiti's image abroad. According to the Ministry of Tourism last year, approximately 2,873 visitors came to Haiti to partake in the event. However, the government's approximate $2 million (€1.49 million) expenditure on the event has been met with heavy criticism by those who believe the money could be better spent.

Video: 19th Century Imperialism - Crash Course

In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called "primitive" nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise.

Video: American Imperialism - Crash Course

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

Video: The Atlantic Slave Trade - Crash Course

In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color.

Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance.

Video: Decolonization and Nationalism Triumphant - Crash Course

In which John Green teaches you about the post-World War II breakup of most of the European empires. As you'll remember from previous installments of Crash Course, Europeans spent several centuries sailing around the world creating empires, despite the fact that most of the places they conquered were perfectly happy to carry on alone. After World War II, most of these empires collapsed. This is the story of those collapses. In most places, the end of empire was not orderly, and violence often ensued. While India was a (sort of) shining example of non-violent change, in places like The Congo, Egypt, Rwanda, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, things didn't go smoothly at all. John brings you all this, plus pictures of Sea Monkeys. Sadly, they don't look anything like those awesome commercials in the comic books.

Video: US Slavery - Crash Course

In which John Green teaches you about America's "peculiar institution," slavery. I wouldn't really call it peculiar. I'd lean more toward horrifying and depressing institution, but nobody asked me. John will talk about what life was like for a slave in the 19th century United States, and how slaves resisted oppression, to the degree that was possible. We'll hear about cotton plantations, violent punishment of slaves, day to day slave life, and slave rebellions. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Whipped Peter all make an appearance. Slavery as an institution is arguably the darkest part of America's history, and we're still dealing with its aftermath 150 years after it ended.

Video: America’s Secret Killers (2011 Documentary)

The strike that killed Osama bin Laden provided a glimpse of the vast and often secret campaign by US special forces and troops to kill thousands of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters. They call it ‘precision targeting’; their critics say it’s assassination.

A six-month investigation by Dispatches has gone inside the US ‘kill/capture’ programme to discover new evidence of the strategy’s impact, and its costs. The team have talked to key figures in the US military, to US spies and to Taliban commanders and fighters.

General David Petraeus, since he took command of troops in 2010, has ordered a major expansion of these ‘manhunt’ missions that rely on highly classified intelligence, cutting-edge technology and Special Operations forces.

Correspondent Stephen Grey and producer Dan Edge explore the logic behind the kill/capture policy, and ask if this unremitting pursuit of the enemy will help end the war in Afghanistan.

The military say these operations have led to the death or detention of more than 12,000 Taliban insurgents in 12 months. Petraeus and his advisers argue that a ruthless, accurate and relentless campaign against enemy leaders will paralyse the insurgency and force them to the negotiating table.

On the ground in Baghlan Province in Afghanistan, US raids have put the Taliban on the run. But Dispatches makes contact with a young – and important – Taliban commander who says that, after the targeted killings of two of his seniors, he was simply promoted up the ranks to take their place: ‘This war has become like delicious food for us. When a day passes without fighting we get restless.’

Released in 2011. 48 min. Director: Daniel Edge. TV documentary.

Video: Welcome to Nulandistan: Propaganda and the crisis in Ukraine - GRTV

This full length GRTV documentary looks at the fictitious land of Nulandistan that has been constructed out of Ukraine. The GRTV documentary deconstructs Nulandistan and the propaganda of the Obama Administration, the US Department of States, US officials, and their allies about the crisis in Ukraine and takes a look at their growing frustration towards the Russian media, particularly RT, for challenging their account of the events on the ground in what they have declared is an intensifying information war.

The full length documentary starts by looking at the self-benefiting description of the EuroMaidan protests that US officials have used and how it has grossly diverged from reality. Then the Odessa Massacre is deconstructed for audiences.

The documentary then looks at the situation in East Ukraine, including the violence and referenda. The events in East Ukraine are then contrasted to the positions of US officials and Russia.

This documentary shows how the reality of events in Ukraine has been been misappropriated and propagandized to support US foreign policy and to justify tensions against Russia.

Video: The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa - Democracy Now!

As the world focuses on Tuesday's historic handshake between President Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro, we look back at the pivotal role Cuba played in ending apartheid and why Castro was one of only five world leaders invited to speak at Nelson Mandela's memorial. In the words of Mandela, the Cuban "destroyed the myth of the invincibility of the white oppressor ... [and] inspired the fighting masses of South Africa." Historian Piero Gleijeses argues that it was Cuba's victory in Angola in 1988 that forced Pretoria to set Namibia free and helped break the back of apartheid South Africa. We speak to Gleijeses about his new book, "Visions of Freedom: Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991," and play archival footage of Mandela meeting Fidel Castro in Cuba.

Video: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Chávez: Inside the Coup)

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Spanish: La revolución no será transmitida), also known as Chávez: Inside the Coup, is a 2003 documentary focusing on events in Venezuela leading up to and during the April 2002 coup d'état attempt, which saw President Hugo Chávez removed from office for two days. With particular emphasis on the role played by Venezuela's private media, the film examines several key incidents: the protest march and subsequent violence that provided the impetus for Chávez's ousting; the opposition's formation of an interim government headed by business leader Pedro Carmona; and the Carmona administration's collapse, which paved the way for Chávez's return. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised was directed by Irish filmmakers Kim Bartley and Donnacha Ó Briain. Given direct access to Chávez, the filmmakers intended to make a fly-on-the-wall biography of the president. They spent seven months filming in Venezuela, following Chávez and his staff and interviewing ordinary citizens. As the coup unfolded on 11 April, Bartley and Ó Briain filmed on the streets of the capital, Caracas, capturing footage of protesters and the erupting violence. Later, they filmed many of the political upheavals inside Miraflores, the presidential palace.

Video: Donetsk seeks to form 'National Bank' - Press TV INfocus

P1

A parliament member in the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk says the parliament is planning to form a National Bank in order to facilitate tax payments.

"The biggest challenge at the moment is to form a National Bank, because without a National Bank, it is very hard to redirect taxes and payments," says Alexander Yevenievich, the minister of transport in the People's Republic of Donetsk.

"I think the winner will be the side that wins the economic war... the most effective way to win is to stop sending money to Kiev," says Yevenievich, adding that "If Kiev stops receiving money from us, it will fall apart."

The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in Ukraine have been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since mid-April. The violence intensified after the two regions declared independence from Ukraine on May 12 following local referendums, in which the residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

Video: The Great Challenge: China, Russia - Press TV

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990, the US became the world's superpower. The US, then tried to contain its future rivals, that is Russia and China. With this aim, the US proposed the project of "the greater middle-east". The US occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq and its presence in the middle-east was not for fighting terrorism or establishing democracy but for controlling the the region as the main source of energy. This way, the US wanted to control the world and its rivals in particular. In recent decades, Russia and China have become more and more powerful in the international arena politically, economically and militarily. Now they veto the US just to show that the country is no longer the superpower. And the US knows well that with China and Russia, it will not be able to execute its plan to control the world as easily as it could three decades ago.

Video: Slavery continues in Mauritania - Press TV Africa Today

P1

It was a controversial election, boycotted by several parties, but General Ould Abdel Aziz has been returned as the president of Mauritania, winning 82 percent of the votes.

Aziz has been congratulated by the African Union as well as the United States and France, which see him as a key ally in their "war on terror."

But while he claims to be a defender of human rights, Mauritania has become known as the last bastion of slavery.

Although the practice was finally criminalized in 2007, the country still has around six hundred thousand people, known as Haratan, who are held in bondage by fellow Mauritanians.

While the Haratan are black sub-Saharan Africans, their "owners" are overwhelmingly lighter-skinned Arabs.

Virunga, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, is Africa's oldest national park, and home to half the continent's endangered mountain gorillas.

It is one of the world's great heritage sites with three thousand square miles of precious flora and fauna.

Since 2010, the British firm SOCO International has been exploring the region for oil, with the permission of the Congolese government.

Activists have campaigned against SOCO, saying the company is putting both the wildlife and livelihoods of the regional people at risk.

The Human Rights Watch has accused the government of DR Congo and the British oil company SOCO International of threatening those who want to protect the Virunga Park, and being behind the shooting of a park ranger.

In April Emmanuel de Merode, Virunga's chief park ranger was shot in an ambush. Under pressure, SOCO, which denied any involvement in the attack, has agreed not to pursue further oil exploration.
