VIDEO: Troubled Island - A Opera about the rise and fall of the first Emperor of Haiti

Filmed in front of a live studio audience by PeoplepicturesMedia these workshops presents extracts from the work of African American composer William Grant Still.The Opera sung in English tells the story of Jean Jacques Dessalines in Haiti following the triumphant defeat of the French by Toussaint L'Ouverture. With Toussaint's betrayal and death in French captivity, Dessalines took over the resistance of Haiti and in 1804 was proclaimed supreme governor under the title of Emperor the 1st. This meant Dessalines became the first leader of the Independent Republic of Haiti for people of African descent.
