Advocating for Agroecology in West Africa

Steve Brescia, Groundswell International’s Executive Director, is currently in Burkina Faso for the second workshop of a two-year regional project to scale agroecology in West Africa funded by the New Venture Fund’s International Fund to Amplify Agro-Ecological Solutions (IFAAES). The project builds on Groundswell’s work strengthening family farmers and farmers’ organizations in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Mali.

Over the next several days, our partners will discuss strategies to amplify and advocate for agroecological farming and food sovereignty in West Africa. These partners include: Association Nourrir Sans Détruire (Burkina Faso), Sahel Eco (Mali), Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (Ghana), ILEIA – Centre for Learning on Sustainable Agriculture (the Netherlands), and Food First (US).

The regional project is reflective of our mission to support community-based organizations to work together and engage in wider coalitions for change. Other organizations participating in the workshop include Food Sovereignty Ghana, Coalition for the Protection of African Genetic Heritage (COPAGEN), Federation Nationale des Organisations Paysannes (FENOP), and Association Organisations Professionelles Paysannes (AOPP).
