Haiti Ups Quake Death Toll to 230K

The Haitian government has raised the estimated death toll from the Jan. 12 earthquake to 230,000, with more still uncounted. That's equal to the number killed by the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in December 2004.

The initial death toll was put at 150,000 on Jan. 24, then raised to 212,000. A government official said the new estimate does not include victims buried by their families or by private mortuaries in private cemeteries.

A poll released today found that 60% of U.S. Haitians said they had lost loved ones in the quake.
