Jozy Altidore's move to Sunderland hit a high point in the Capital One Cup. Taking a 2-1 lead against Manchester United into Old Trafford, Sunderland needed extra time and penalties to advance to the final against Manchester City. United equalized on aggregate with a 37th minute goal from Jonathan Evans. That score held through regulation and most of extra time.
United goalkeeper David De Gea couldn't control Philip Bardsley's shot in the 119th minute with Sunderland counting the seconds to their win. Instead, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez finished off a cross a minute into stoppage time to send the game to penalties. The penalty phase ended 2-1 to Sunderland, with United missing on their final three attempts from the spot. Altidore subbed on in the 86th minute.
“It’s going to be incredible, it’s going to be unique, it’s going to be very difficult but it’s going to be a great day," Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said of the Capital One Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Mar 2. “Let’s make sure we get plenty of points in the Premier League between now and then so we can enjoy the day.”
