Haiti's perfume industry: Luxury scent of the Isle of Dread

Haiti's economy is ailing since the devastating earthquake. But the Caribbean country has an export hit: Vetiver oil. The liquid is an important raw material for the perfume industry. The success of producers like Joel Blanchard gives this country a little hope.

With a soft cracking open the bottle. Joel Blanchard it keeps the visitor's nose. The oily brown liquid it exudes a woody, astringent scent. It smells a bit like the forest after rainfall. "Without here going into the perfume industry almost nothing," says Blanchard and smiles convinced.
