NFL free agency is officially here which means the Chargers have announced a laundry list of moves designed to shape the 2010 roster.
Topping the list - the high tender on running back Darren Sproles. But before we get to even that - it's good bye Antonio Cromartie.
The former first round draft pick was traded to the New York Jets Thursday for a 2011 third round pick that could turn into a second round pick.
Cromartie peaked in 2007 with an all pro season, but has been disappointing ever since.
Yeah he can run fast - but he's not really interested in tackling anybody as noted during that last playoff game against the Jets, his new team.
Back to Sproles - looks like the 5'6 spark plug and fan favorite will be back with a one year contract of nearly $7.3 million next season assuming he doesn't sign with another team.
He could still do that, his agent says there was a lot of interest - but because the Chargers made him a restricted free agent, they'll get a first and third pick in return from the team that signs him.
Despite earlier reports to the contrary, GM AJ Smith said they want him in the mix, but not as their every down back.
He said expect at least two new running backs added to the mix, especially since they released Michael Bennett.
Sproles wasn't the only one to get the maximum tender Thursday.
Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Marcus McNeill and Shawne Merriman are also restricted free agents requiring a first and third round pick in return.
On the other side of things, Jamal Williams, who owned the line of scrimmage when healthy was released along with Michael Bennett.
Special team Whiz Kassim Osgood is an unrestricted free agent and will not be back.
