VIDEO:Ruiz Scores Three, Puts Costa Rica On Brink Of Advancing With 3:1 Win Over Haiti

Brian Ruiz scored three goals, twice in the second half, to give Costa Rica a 3:1 victory over Haiti on Wednesday and move it to the brink of advancing to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Los Ticos climbed to nine points from three games in Group C, three points ahead of El Salvador, which beat Suriname 2:0 earlier Wednesday. Haiti and Suriname remained tied for last in the group with one point each. Two teams from each of the three semifinal round groups advance.

Ruiz, who scored the final goal in Saturday’s 7:0 rout of Suriname, put Costa Rica ahead in the 17th minute, but Jean Alcenat equalized in the 38th.

Ruiz gave Costa Rica the lead for good in the 72nd and added another in the 85th. Costa Rica can clinch its place in the final round of qualifying on Oct. 11 when it travels to play the return leg against Suriname.

Haiti next will play at home against El Salvador, needing a victory to avoid elimination.
