2 die, 102 injured in Haiti's Carnival festivities

Port-au-Prince: A Haitian official says that two people have died and 102 others have been injured in Carnival festivities that began on Sunday.

Patrick Cerilus of Haiti's Civil Protection Office said today that an early report shows that one man died in a car accident while travelling to the city hosting the party, Gonaives. The other died from excessive drinking.

The official said the injuries resulted from serious allergies and street scuffles.

Celebrations this year were held in Gonaives under a government effort to "decentralise" Carnival by holding festivities in different towns in the countryside each year.

The administration of President Michel Martelly said that it distributed some USD 5 million to repair the infrastructure in Gonaives, a dusty and crumbly port city in the west.
