PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Haiti is launching a program that is meant to help thousands of people of Haitian descent who are at risk of being left stateless by a new law that strips them of citizenship in the Dominican Republic.
Radio Metropole reported Tuesday that Jean Baptiste Saint-Cyr of Haiti's National Identification Office has announced an effort to register people of Haitian descent in the neighboring Dominican Republic as well as Turks and Caicos. It begins next month.
Saint-Cyr said people of Haitian descent will be identified through the help of neighbors.
A Dominican court last year decided to revoke the citizenship of people of Haitian descent even if born in the Dominican Republic.
The two countries began talks this year in an effort to stem tension over the ruling.
