MONTREAL — Haitian-Montrealers are reacting with dismay to a crackdown by the Office québécois de la langue française on a pair of hospital workers who were chatting together in Creole while on the job.
“This is intolerance,” said Patrick Gilles, director general of the Jeune chambre de commerce haïtienne.
“It makes no sense. The OQLF is exaggerating. There is no reason to reprimand anyone over this.
“As people of Haitian origin,” he added, “we speak among ourselves in French and Creole and if we have to give services to other people, we just switch to French.”
