VIDEO: Jean-Michel Basquiat works go on display at Sotheby's

by BLOUIN ARTINFO

More than 30 works by painter Jean-Michel Basquiat will be on display and for private sale at Sotheby's S|2 gallery from May 2 through June 9.

The exhibition "Man Made: Jean-Michel Basquiat" offers a comprehensive view of his short career, from simple works on paper in marker and crayon from 1979 to large highly-finished canvases from 1987, the year before he died at age 27 of a drug overdose.

The Brooklyn-born artist gained fame in the 1980s from his marker drawings anywhere and anytime in Manhattan and his association with Andy Warhol.

The auction record for a Basquiat is "Untitled," a painting of a fisherman that sold for $26.4 million in November.
