Haiti PM Calls on International Community to Deliver on Aid Promises

SANTO DOMINGO, (Xinhua) -- Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive here on Friday urged the international community to deliver promised aid to his earthquake-hit country as soon as possible so as to facilitate its reconstruction projects.

"We are doing the follow-up work of the international donors conference held in New York, and we prepare to attend a summit (on Haitian reconstruction) in June," Bellerive told reporters.

Bellerive was in Santo Domingo attending a preparatory conference ahead of a world summit on Haiti's reconstruction to be held in Punta Cana, east Dominican Republic.

More than 200,000 people were killed in the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake which struck close to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The catastrophe also left one third of the country's 9 million people in need of aid.

More than 40 Santo Domingo-based foreign diplomats and representatives of international organizations attended Friday's meeting.

The June summit, initiated by Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez, will boost and evaluate the reconstruction of Haiti, while ensuring the international funds are in place.

At the international donors conference held at the UN headquarters on March 31, the international community pledged a total of 9.9 billion U.S. dollars in aid for the recovery and reconstruction of Haiti for the next three years and beyond.
