Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive on Sunday extended his condolences over the death of four Spanish soldiers in Friday's helicopter crash in Haiti.
"We are very sorry for the accident on Friday, it was an event that all the Haitian people regret because those soldiers arrived here to aid our difficult situation," Bellerive said, according to reports reaching here from Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.
The UN Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti (Minustah) and the Haitian people are working to save this country, so the day when the four Spanish soldiers were killed was "a black day for us," he added.
The Minustah chief Edmond Mulet also regretted the death of the Spanish soldiers, saying that "another tragedy put the international community into mourning here in Haiti."
The Spanish army "has been present in the last weeks working in favor of the Haitian people, who suffered from the earthquake," Mulet told the local press.
The crashed helicopter was part of the Spanish Humanitarian Mission "Hispaniola," aimed to rebuild Haiti after the devastating earthquake in January, and was based on a Spanish navy amphibious ship, the Castilla.
Bellerive and Mulet made the remarks before taking a helicopter to the Castilla ship, where a ceremony was hosted in honor of the four Spanish soldiers.
