“Melanie JB Charles graces the stage with poise and class” says Dorothy Goosby (Hempstead Council woman). Once she opens her mouth or plays a chord, or blows a note on the flute, you are taken to another place and dimension. This Brooklyn raised Haitian- American has grown up listening to Jazz, R&B, classical, Kompas, and Gospel Music. Attending LaGuardia, High School, she discovered her talent for Composition and wrote a number of pieces that have been featured in major concerts. She also writes and performs in the jazz, neo-soul, and R&B genres. Melanie is a strong performer in Opera singing. She has won five Major scholarship competitions for classical voice. Melanie has worked with the Classical Theatre of Harlem, and renowned actor, Andre DeShields in “Dream on Monkey Mountain.” She has performed with Jazz legends such as Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, pop Star Michael Jackson, and many others. Melanie is currently studying at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music under the tutelage of jazz masters such as Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Carla Cook and others.
In March of 2008, Melanie performed in her first Haitian jazz music showcase at SOB’s in NYC. There, Haitian Jazz music lovers got a glimpse of Melanie’s talents in a short performance. Melanie sang renditions of Haitian standards as well as original compositions and arrangements. “It’s a pleasure to see in the Haitian music scene a fresh new face gracing the stage, and a woman at that” says Tequila Minsky of Caribbean Life Newspaper. Melanie left the stage with a standing ovation and have since added Haitian Jazz music into her diverse repertoire .
On Saturday October 18th 2008, Melanie will be showcased at Solomon’s Porch Café in Booklyn NY. ($10.00 cover charge). Accompanied by David Dormeus (piano) Gashford Guillaume (drums) Patrick Andriantsialonina (bass) and her younger brother Rogerst JB Charles (saxophone), Melanie is set to display the depth of her musical skills in this “up close and personal” all black attire affair.
