Video: Port-au-Prince in flames as anti-Martelly protest erupts - RT Ruptly

Protesters demanding the resignation of Haitian President Michel Martelly took to the streets of Port-au-Prince, Monday.

The crowd, who say Martelly has wasted public money on luxury vehicles and international trips, set up barricades of discarded tyres, setting several alight as they have marched through the capital.

One protester, Andre Fadot, said there is 'hunger and joblessness everywhere, and that the people of Haiti are "very destitute meanwhile this government is wasting money."

Video: Ukraine Crisis - What You're Not Being Told - StormCloudsGathering

The European and American public are being systematically lied to about the Ukraine crisis.

In this video we're going to provide you with compelling evidence that the crimes against humanity committed in Kiev earlier this year were in fact committed by the new coalition government and that officials in the E.U. and the United States knew full well who committed these crimes and that they are protecting and financially supporting the real criminals.

Costa Rica government warned US against launch of 'Cuban Twitter,' now demands answers

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — The Costa Rican government says it's still waiting for the Obama administration to explain why it launched the secret "Cuban Twitter" network from inside the Central American nation's borders despite warnings in 2009 that the plan could jeopardize the two countries' diplomatic relations.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Costa Rican Foreign Minister Enrique Castillo said efforts to affect other countries should not be carried out from inside Costa Rica.

He said his government had not received an answer to its question, which he said was delivered a day after the AP reported on April 3 that the U.S. Agency for International Development funded the secret program to stir political unrest in Communist-ruled Cuba.

"I think it's inappropriate to use an embassy in Costa Rica for this type of operation that harms a third country," Castillo said. "We're not filing a complaint. The point is that embassies accredited in Costa Rica don't have to submit their plans or programs for the Costa Rican government's approval."

Interview: Security Prof. Mark Galeotti talks Covert ops are thebread & butter of geopolitics on RT

Open Secret (ft NYU global affairs professor Mark Galeotti)
The asymmetrical benefits of covert operations have seen them become the bread and butter of geopolitics. And with sabers rattling in Ukraine, accusations of the use of such tactics are rife. But are those events really part of a sinister master plan or is the fear of covert actions creating an atmosphere of paranoia in an essentially anarchic situation? Oksana is joined by Mark Galeotti, a professor of global affairs at New York University, to pry into these issues.

Interview: Sudan FM Ali Karti talks US meddled in Sudan on RT

Oiling the Guns (ft Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti) Sudan's 22-year civil war ended with a 2005 peace accord which led to the secession of South Sudan. But with oil and foreign fingers still in the mix, will the peace hold? Oksana is joined by Ali Ahmed Karti, the Foreign Minister of Sudan, to crack these issues.

Video: Ghana's EPAs dilemma: to sign or not to sign? - Press TV Africa Today

P1

The European Union has been trying hard to have African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries sign Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) which will create free trade areas between the two regions.

In 2007, Ghana initialed an interim EPA. Cote d'Ivoire fully signed onto it with Nigeria refusing to sign. Initially these EPAs were supposed to take effect on January 1, 2008.

Many ACP countries are reluctant to sign them because there is very little direct benefit for their people while the EU has set stringent time-frames to beat competition from the US, China, Brazil, Turkey and India.

Under these EPAs, ACP countries will have to progressively remove all duty and other import tariffs on goods manufactured in EU countries. This means they will lose a vital source of their developmental revenue while gaining "access to EU markets".

Ghana has been operating under a temporary EPA for the last seven years.

John Kerry, clueless buffoon

Oh, the burden of empire! It weighs so heavily on John Kerry’s shoulders:

"Secretary of State John Kerry attested Tuesday to the massively complex challenges Washington faces in Ukraine, Russia, Iran and the Middle East, declaring ‘it was easier’ during the Cold War.

"In a candid moment during a State Department speech, the top US diplomat said changing global power dynamics made a quaint memory of the early East-West stalemate, when American children would ‘crouch under our desks at school and practice’ safety steps for a possible nuclear attack.

“’During the Cold War… it was easier than it is today – simpler is maybe a way to put it,’ Kerry told aid and development experts.

“’The choices were less varied, less complicated, more stark, more clear: Communism, democracy, West, East, the Iron Curtain.’”

Yes, those were the Good Old Days – when children in the schoolroom cowered beneath their desks – and we almost went to war with the nuclear-armed Soviet Union over missiles in Cuba which posed no more threat than missiles outside Moscow. Does "quaint" even begin to describe that vintage scene? It’s all so Currier & Ives.

NYPD's hashtag campaign #myNYPD backfires horribly

In an age where bystanders commonly use their phones to document abuses of power by law enforcement, it’s understandable that police want to turn something like Twitter to their advantage.

Too bad most civilians aren’t interested in burnishing the NYPD’s reputation for them, as they so politely requested in a hashtag campaign that was doomed from the outset.

US government ‘profiting from inmate labor’

“Although incarcerated, federal inmates feel a sense of patriotism and have continually contributed to our successful war efforts.”
—Federal Prison Industries (FPI)

Operating under the trade name of UNICOR with over 100 factories at 75 locations across the continental United States, Federal Prison Industries (FPI) produces a wide range of market-priced goods and services to the US Federal government and the private sector.

From manufacturing office furniture to recycling electronics, FPI operations even include a one-stop shopping call center staffed by inmates to speed processing of orders. Boasting ISO 9001:2000 certification and Lean Six Sigma processes in its factories, the FPI even makes helmets for the US military, using convict labor earning from $0.23 per hour up to a maximum of $1.15 per hour.

With a diversity of products and services from ADP (automatic data processing) and telecommunications services to XML (extensible markup language) tagging, the FPI is a huge government-run corporate entity, which not only sells to civilian federal agencies, but also to the US military.

Video: Ethiopian women face violence, rape in Saudi Arabia - Press TV Infocus

P1

Ethiopian migrant workers as well as right activists say female workers are being "beaten, robbed, imprisoned and raped" in Saudi Arabia.

Zeneit Hussein, a 15-year-old Ethiopian girl who was in Saudi Arabia for eight months says she has been kept in prison for 4 month.

"Life was good for three months, then employer started trouble. I don't know what they did to me. I became sick; they took me to the hospital...when I arrived at Bole international airport, I was unconscious. Red Cross people took me, I could not walk, they put me on a stretcher" said Zaneit.

Human right activists believe these female workers, being trafficked from Ethiopia's rural areas, refrain from expressing the true account of their ordeal due to social constraints.

"They have faced so many problems like violence, but they don't disclose everything. They don't say it but we have to consider that maybe their problem is associated with violence and rape" said Tirubrhan Getnet from Good Samaritan Association.

"They cannot openly say somebody raped me but...some come [back from Saudi Arabia] with gynecological related bleeding which means they have been raped, but they don't say it," added Getnet.

This is while on November 12, 2013, the Saudi police killed three Ethiopian migrant workers in the impoverished neighborhood of Manfuhah in the capital, Riyadh, where thousands of African workers, were waiting for buses to take them to deportation centers.

Video: Cold War 2.0 and the Threat of Nuclear Warfare - GRTV Backgrounder

The rhetoric that has been spewed in recent years about nuclear disarmament is, of course, was always just that: rhetoric. The US government has never seriously considered giving up its nuclear stockpile, or even renouncing a first-use nuclear doctrine.

As Dr. Yuki Tanaka of Hiroshima University explains, the Obama administration has not simply continued the aggressive Bush-era stance on America's nuclear arsenal, but actually extended it.

In reality, the Obama administration has simply reaffirmed and even extended the existing US nuclear policy allowing for a first-strike, offensive nuclear war against its enemies.

Silky Wilky Campfort beats Khurshid Abdullaev, improves to 17-1

For the first fully international card of the night junior middleweight Haitian Wilky Campfort (17-1, 9 KOs) took on undefeated Khurshid Abdullaev (6-1-1, 3 KOs) of Russia for eight rounds. Campfort knocked Abdullaev down in the first and in the second Campfort threw Abdullaev out of the ring. The Russian came back with a vengeance in the third getting in several key hits. This gutty, gritty brawl was almost too close to call. Campfort won via a very close split decision with the judges scoring the bout 77-74 for Campfort, 76-74 for Abdullaev and 76-75 for Campfort.

In the only New York versus New York match-up of the evening, heavyweights Adam Kownacki (6-0, 6 KOs) of Brooklyn, NY and Excell Holmes (2-3-1, 1 KO) of Buffalo, NY hooked up for a scheduled four rounds. Kownacki came out swinging early and had Holmes bleeding and up against the ropes in the first round. The crowd was filled with Kownacki supporters and they were letting Holmes know it. Kownacki continued to come after Holmes in the second when the referee stopped the fight at 0:41. Kownacki keeps his perfect undefeated record of every win coming by way of knockout alive.

Video: CIS - European NGOs 'train agents for intrastate conflicts' - Press TV

The Commonwealth of Independent States has warned against an increase in mercenary terrorism, revealing that European NGOs train agents to engage in intrastate conflicts around the world.

The CIS Anti-terrorism Committee head, Andrey Novikov, said that there are over 2000 schools across the continent preparing experts for conducting psychological and subversive operations. Novikov also said that private military companies and security agencies cooperate with NGOs in this regard. He said that monitoring the activity of NGOs ahead of the 2004 Orange Revolution in Ukraine and the 2005 Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan proves the claim. Novikov further expressed concerns about trained militants who have returned home, and continue their subversive activities.

Video: Chris Hedges - The Myth of Progress and the Collapse of Complex Societies

The naive belief in the myth of human progress, in endless material advancement and technological advancement, is a form of magical thinking. The very forces that allowed us to dominate nature, from the machine to the fossil fuel industry, are the same forces that, if left unchecked, will ensure our extinction. And yet, we cannot wrest ourselves away from our own creations as we ruthlessly exhaust and exploit a dying eco-system. This is how all civilizations vanish. The difference is that when we go down this time the whole planet will go with us. There will be no new lands to conquer, no new peoples to subjugate, no new resources to plunder. We must rise up in open revolt against the established systems of power that are herding us over the cliff or accept our death as a species.

CHRIS HEDGES: spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than 50 countries and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, for which he was a foreign correspondent for 15 years. He left the Times after being issued a formal reprimand for denouncing the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq.

Interview: Rebel leader Riek Machar says South Sudan president muststep down on Press TV Face to Face

P1

South Sudan's rebel leader, Riek Machar, says President Salva Kiir should step down, accusing Juba of attempting to sabotage the peace talks aimed at ending the violence in the country.

Machar blamed the government forces for breaking a ceasefire deal signed between Juba and rebel forces on January 23 in an effort to end weeks of fierce fighting which led to the death of thousands of people in the world's youngest nation.

South Sudan has been grappling with deadly fighting since December 15, 2013, when Kiir accused his sacked deputy, Machar, of attempting to stage a coup. The conflict soon turned into an all-out war between the army and defectors.

Human Rights Watch says there must be a full investigation into "horrendous" atrocities committed during weeks of conflict and ethnic killings in South Sudan.

The UK government is providing financial aid to human rights abusers in Ethiopia through funding training paramilitaries, who perpetrate summary killings, rape and torture in the impoverished African country, local media reported.

Through its foreign aid budget, the UK government provides financial support to an Ethiopian government security force known as the "special police" as part of its "peace and development programme", which would cost up to £15 million in five years, The Guardian reported.

The Department for International Development warned in a leaked document of the "reputational risks" of working with organizations that are "frequently cited in human rights violation allegations", according to the report.

The Ethiopian government's counter-insurgency campaign in Ogaden, a troubled region largely populated by ethnic Somalis is being enforced by the 14,000-strong special police.

This is while police forces are repeatedly accused by Human Rights Watch of serious human rights abuses.

Claire Beston, the Amnesty International's Ethiopia researcher, said it was highly concerning that Britain was planning to work with the paramilitary force.

Video: Libya War - What They Don't Want You to Know - The Corbett Report

We are taught all our lives that our modern political systems are "by and for the people." In order to justify taking us to war, then, our misleaders have to convince us that war is not a racket, as General Smedley Butler revealed, and is not for the benefit of the industrialists who sell the munitions or the politicians in their back pocket or the financiers that own them both, but in the interest of the average man or woman. In other words, they lie through their teeth.

Find out more about the lies that led us to Libya in 2011, and the cover up of what is taking place there today in this week's edition of The Eyeopener report.

10 weirdest Caribbean animals

The Caribbean is not only a mash-up of Old and New World cultures, it's also a mash-up biologically. Indigenous species live side-by-side with animals who floated in from South America or were brought in by Europeans. That can make for some surprises for visitors who stumble across these critters unexpectedly.

DRUNK MONKEYS

Green vervet monkeys arrived in St. Kitts with Africans brought as slaves to work the sugar cane fields. Researchers theorize the monkeys got a taste for the hooch by snacking on fermented cane that was left in the fields after harvest. There's a lot less cane cultivation in St. Kitts nowadays, but, luckily for the monkeys, there are a lot more bars. Like drunks everywhere, they exhibit poor manners, swiping rumrunners and running or pilfering piña coladas poolside. Researchers studying the monkeys found that the ratio of alcoholic monkeys to teetotalers was about the same among the monkeys as it is in human populations. As the saying goes, there's one in every crowd. So what's a vervet monkey's favorite beer? Free beer. What's a vervet monkey's second favorite beer? Free light beer.

VAMPIRE BAT

Before you go packing garlic in your carry-on, vampire bats are only found in the Caribbean in Trinidad and along the Central American coast. Having said that, they're thirsty little suckers. Fortunately, they're also small — 3 inches long and an ounce and half in weight. Yes, they do attack sleeping mammals (including people) and drink their blood, but because they're so small, they only drink about an ounce of blood at a time. Want to be freaked out? Vampire bats are pretty nimble on the ground, too, hopping and running by using their wings as an extra set of feet. Early Spanish naturalists reported that the Conquistadors in Panama and the Yucatan were attacked by vampire bats. And that name — actually the bat was named for the mythological monster, not the other way around. The Aztecs called them quimich-paplotl, which means butterfly mouse. That's much less threatening.

Video: Russia, Caribbean and Latin America to strengthen defenseties - Press TV

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has announced a plan to establish military bases in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

The negotiations with the Latin American countries also include the use of infrastructure and refueling sites in these countries. The agreement is part of a series of actions aimed at increasing Russia's presence in Latin America. The US presence in Ecuador, Honduras and Venezuela and its reactivation of its fourth Fleet in 2008 to establish a base in Colombia was a significant event. The move raised regional leaders' concern and prompted initiatives such as the South American Defense Council and talks with Russia and China. To the US Southern Command General John Kelly, however, the sudden increase in Russia's military outreach merits closer attention, as he says Moscow's motives are unclear. He warned the US Senate that China, Iran and Russia have made a concerted effort in recent years to bolster their presence and influence in Latin America. For a decade now, Russia has been working consistently in forging bonds with Latin American countries in its pursuit for a multipolar world. This effort includes diplomatic visits and investments in military modernization. For instance, this partnership meant about 14.5 billion dollars in arms sales to Venezuela from 2001 to 2013.

Heineken invest $100m in Haiti brewery that makes Prestige Lager

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The Dutch brewer Heineken announced Friday that it is investing $100 million in its Haiti production plant that makes the popular lager Prestige.

The relatively large investment is significant because many international companies have been reluctant to spend money in Haiti because of a business climate hampered by red tape, allegations of corruption and a flimsy infrastructure.

But Jose Matthijsse, general director of the National Brewery of Haiti that Heineken owns, said the Dutch company is eager to invest more in the Caribbean country because political stability and cooperation have improved under the current government.

Heineken purchased the Haitian brewery in 2011, and owns 95 percent of the company that produces Prestige. The remaining 5 percent is held by Diageo Ireland, the company that makes Guinness stout.

About one-fifth of the new investment has already gone toward construction of a second 24,300-square-foot (2,260) production line that opened December in the same facility in Port-au-Prince. The addition will allow the brewery to double output, for 40,000 more cases of Prestige and other beverages produced every day.

Video: Unmanned Menace - UK to redeploy Afghan killer drone fleet to Africa - RT

UN official says Britain's unmanned drone fleet could soon be redeployed to Africa and the Middle East, following the military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. That's sparked fears of more collateral damage, with some observers accusing the UK of failing to fully account for the civilian deaths already caused by its Afghan drone campaign. But as RT's Sara Firth reports, the British public is largely oblivious to the issue.

Africa’s growth set to reach 5.2%

Economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continues to rise from 4.7 percent in 2013 to a forecasted 5.2 percent in 2014. This performance is boosted by rising investment in natural resources and infrastructure, and strong household spending, according to the World Bank’s new Africa s Pulse, a twice-yearly analysis of the issues shaping Africa s economic prospects.

Growth was notably buoyant in resource-rich countries, including Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It remained steady in Cote d Ivoire, while rebounding in Mali, supported by improved political stability and security. Non-resource-rich countries, particularly Ethiopia and Rwanda, also experienced solid economic growth in 2013.

Capital flows to Sub-Saharan Africa continued to rise, reaching an estimated 5.3 percent of regional GDP in 2013, significantly above the developing-country average of 3.9 percent. Net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to the region grew 16 percent to a near-record $43 billion in 2013, boosted by new oil and gas discoveries in many countries including Angola, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

With lower international food and fuel prices, and prudent monetary policy, inflation slowed in the region, growing at an annual rate of 6.3 percent in 2013, compared with 10.7 percent a year ago. Some countries, such as Ghana and Malawi, have seen an uptick in inflation because of depreciating currencies. Remittances to the region grew 6.2 percent to $32 billion in 2013, exceeding the record of $30 billion reached in 2011. These inflows, combined with lower food prices, boosted household real incomes and spending.

Crimea: Lessons for Africa

The recent suspension of Russia from the G8 club of rich countries has been described as “no big deal” by the President Vladimir Putin-led administration.

The group of leaders retaliated over President Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Ukraine’s region of Crimea by agreeing to exclude Russia from their meetings.

United States of America’s President, Barack Obama, joined David Cameron of UK and the leaders of France, Germany, Canada, Italy and Japan to impose the penalty.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said G8 is an informal organization that does not give out any membership cards and, by its definition, cannot remove anyone.

According to him, all the economic and financial questions are decided in G20, and G8 exists as a forum for dialogue between the leading Western countries and Russia.

However, the G8 stopped short of permanently barring Russia from the top table of international politics, holding open the prospect of readmission if Moscow agrees to “abide by international rules”.

Vikings sign OL Vladimir Ducasse to 1-year deal

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed free agent offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse (doo-CASS) to a one-year deal.

The team announced the signing on Thursday. Ducasse spent the first four seasons of his career with the New York Jets. He was a second-round draft choice out of Massachusetts in 2010.

Ducasse appeared in all 16 games for the Jets last season and made four starts at guard. He will add depth to the Vikings offensive line, which will return all five starters from last year's unit. The 26-year-old Ducasse visited Vikings headquarters last week, but left without signing a contract. He had contact with several other teams before ultimately deciding to sign with Minnesota.

Ducasse played tackle in college, but has played mostly at guard in the NFL.

Interview: Abaka Bay’s Robert Dietrich talks fight for Haiti’s Ile aVache on News Junkie Post

Mr. Robert Dietrich, a founding owner of Abaka Bay Resort, on the 20-square-mile Haitian offshore island of Ile a Vache, is at the center of a fight for the island between its residents and Haiti’s government. This traditionally peaceful island with 20,000 people has been besieged by over 115 militarized police since several peaceful protestors were injured by police on February 25, 2014 at a spontaneous protest against the imprisonment without charge of Jean Maltunes Lamy, one of their leaders. The residents had been demanding the repeal of a government decree of May 2013 that had annulled all property rights retroactively for five years and declared the entire island to be a “zone of tourism development and public utility.” They object to the reconfiguration of the island for tourism without their consultation on the locations to be developed, the terms to be offered to investors, possible returns for their community, and fair compensation for any appropriated lands.

In addition to creating work at his resort for local residents on Ile a Vache, during and after the construction of his hotel, Robert Dietrich has taken an interest in the community. He was a founder of the Good Samaritan School in Kay Kok, and he has provided material support like food aid and school supplies to the community. Immediately after the January 2010 earthquake, he used his hotel as a depot from which to distribute supplies of clothes, sanitary kits and food that he had brought from Florida for the earthquakes victims in Port-au-Prince.

WikiLeaks release: Internet governance body trying to stop NSA surveillance

WikiLeaks has published what the anti-secrecy organization says is the penultimate draft agreement expected to be discussed later this month in Brazil at a global internet governance meeting co-hosted by 12 countries including the United States.

The 11-page document published on Tuesday by the secret-spilling website is based off of the recommendations submitted by more than 180 international contributors who cared to weigh in with their take on how they think the internet and its infrastructure should be governed ahead of a conference on the matter scheduled to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil April 23-24.

According to the draft published by WikiLeaks this week and dated April 4, the committee tasked with preparing for the upcoming Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance — or NETmundial — are concerned about the impact that government-sanctioned surveillance is having on the privacy of the planet’s web-connected population and the infrastructure of the internet, as well as the repercussions being brought to light as cyber-weapons continue to be waged between adversarial states around the world as warfare remains a central yet shadowy activity within the digital realm.

The meeting, the conference website reads, “[W]ill focus on the elaboration of principles of Internet governance and the proposal for a roadmap for future development of this ecosystem,” and “represents the beginning of a process for the construction of such policies in the global context, following a model of participatory plurality.” Representatives from Brazil, France, Ghana, Germany, India, Indonesia, South Africa, South Korea, Tunisia, Turkey and the US have agreed to participate.

Wyclef Jean is broke, claims artist's manager

MARCH 21--Wyclef Jean’s former lawyers have filed a six-figure legal judgment against the musician after he failed to make agreed-upon payments to reduce his debt, according to court filings that include a recent e-mail from Jean’s business manager claiming that his client was broke.

“there ain’t no money,” Jean’s accountant declared in a terse January e-mail to his creditors.

Other records show that federal and state authorities have, since mid-2012, hit the performer with nearly $2.9 million in tax liens (which remain outstanding).

According to New York State Supreme Court filings, Jean last year agreed to pay the law firm Shukat Arrow Hafer Weber & Herbsman $100,000 to settle an outstanding bill topping $133,000.

As part of a confidential settlement agreement, Jean was required to pay the firm $10,000 by August 1, 2013, and $50,000 by year’s end. The agreement stipulated that if Jean made those two payments, the firm would waive the remaining $40,000 it was owed by the musician. However, the agreement notes, if Jean failed to make the payments, he would be on the hook for the entire $100,000, plus 10 percent annual interest.

Skal Labissiere on road to recovery from back stress fracture

It has been a tough year for Skal Labissiere. After playing just two games for Evangelical Christian School, he went down with an injury. There were numerous trips to the doctor and numerous return dates that were pushed back. Eventually, it was determined that those two games would be all that was of the Haitian’s high school campaign.

“It was tough,” Labissiere said of missing virtually his entire junior season. “I am not trying to rush it and want to let it heal completely.”

The injury that Labissiere was referring to was a stress fracture in his back that he suffered in the winter. Along with foot and knee injuries, any lower body injury is something that you certainly don’t want to rush back from as a young player with the potential that this 6-foot-10 junior has. While it was incredibly difficult sitting out so long, he understood that this precaution was necessary.

“I just started rehab and should be able to play in three to four weeks,” he confidently added. “A stress fracture is nothing to mess around with.”

Video: 'Ayiti Toma (in The Land of the Living)' Trailer

“Beyond Haiti – the country known for its natural disasters and humanitarian aid debacle – lies Ayiti Toma, “the country that is ours”. This documentary is an encounter with the magical Haitian people that arose from the darkness of slavery to create the first Black Republic. It presents Ayiti Toma both through the eyes of Haitians including politicians, intellectuals, vodou practitioners and youth from hard-hit and dangerous neighbourhoods, and from the point of view of anthropologists, historians and aid workers, including actor Sean Penn. Their testimony portrays the vibrant Haitian culture as the key to the future if Haiti is to become Ayiti Toma.”

New ambassador modernizes Canada’s hidden agenda in Venezuela

Amidst headlines dominated by the situation in Ukraine, this bit of news slipped by almost unnoticed at the end of February; Ben Rowswell replaced Paul Gibbard as Canadian ambassador to Venezuela, as mandated by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. But a quick look into the appointee’s background brings special significance to his promotion, especially as opposition protests escalate in Venezuela.

Described in 2010 as a “rising foreign service star” by the Toronto Star, Rowswell has served as Canada’s official diplomatic representative in a number of conspicuous places across the Middle East. From Kandahar, Afghanistan to Kabul and Iraq immediately after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Rowswell has become an expert at representing Canada’s interests in the heat of conflict.

At the age of 22 he was baptized into the foreign service by fire, working in Mogadishu during the Somali Civil War of the early 1990s. He went on to work for the Canadian Embassy in Cairo from 1995-98.

A diplomat for the digital age, he held the title of "Director of Innovation" at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

Ciné Institute, Haiti's only film school is at the helm of fostering a new generation of Haitian filmmakers. For those unfamiliar with the school which launched in 2008, Ciné Institute's mission “gives a powerful voice to Haiti's storytellers” bringing in local and international leaders and filmmakers to help build an emerging film industry.

The non-profit film school's program includes creative and hands-on training, employment opportunities with international clients as well as workshops taught by luminaries like Paul Haggis, Edwidge Danticat, and Jonathan Demme.

Offering a unique tuition free two-year college education made possible by private donations, the Institute is building a reputation for producing fresh talent like Amiral Gaspard, director of Le Bon, Le Méchant et L'apprenti (The Good, The Bad, and the Apprentice) who won our Shadow and Act Fantastical Short Film Contest in January. Other standout projects in the pipeline include Funérarium (Funeral), an enigmatic TV pilot developed by Miguel Alvarez with other second year Ciné students as well as the release of Reincarnation, the first feature film produced by Ciné graduates last year.

Based in Jacmel, a stunning seaside town in Haiti's South East region, the Institute has ambitious plans to jump start “Jollywood” Jacmel's answer to India's Bollywood and Nigeria's Nollywood by emphasizing local talent and resources.

Olivia Wilde writes about burying bodies in Haiti

Actress Olivia Wilde, who left her rich-and-beautiful life behind to volunteer in Haiti, writes in a new magazine piece about the gruesome scenes she and her business partner found there, and how it changed them.

Writing in the spring issue of Darling magazine, Wilde and her partner, Babs Burchfield, explore their experience, which led to the founding of their company, Conscious Commerce.

"We stood next to each other, cigarettes dangling from our mouths, rum burning our throats, hazmat suits covering everything but our sweaty faces, clutching a handful of rosaries each," they write in one section.

"We were aware of the unlikelihood of the moment — two white American girls working to bag bodies in a morgue — but this was Haiti, and we had come to expect the darkly unexpected. We were among a group of local volunteers who made this gruesome journey weekly, giving a dignified burial to the city's discarded poor. The cigarettes were to mask the retched smell, the rum to ease the shock."

Haiti, which is still suffering from the devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake, has been the focus of several celebrity efforts to help with its recovery.
