Haiti launches construction of $16m dollar Supreme Court building funded by Taiwan

Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Aug. 13 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou and Haiti's President Michel Martelly jointly presided over a ceremony marking the beginning of construction of a new Supreme Court building funded by Taiwan in the Haitian capital Tuesday. The building, which will cost around US$16 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2015, will replace the old courthouse that was destroyed in a powerful earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation in January 2010. During his address at the ceremony, Ma said he was deeply moved that Haiti had given priority to the project, which he said demonstrated the importance Haiti attaches to the rule of law. Martelly said rebuilding Haiti's judicial system and improving work conditions are two essential components of the reconstruction of the quake-devastated country, a goal that the government is working toward in cooperation with the private sector. Ma arrived in Haiti earlier Tuesday on the first leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour. He is the first Republic of China (Taiwan) president to visit Haiti since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1956. Ma was greeted at the airport by Martelly. The two presidents later held talks at the presidential palace. During the meeting, Martelly described the ROC as the most important ally of Haiti, recalling that the first rescue team to arrive in Haiti in the wake of the 2010 earthquake was from Taiwan.

Jean Pascal vs George Blades on September 28th in Montreal, Canada

By Allan Fox: The ring rusty Jean Pascal (27-2-1, 16 KO’s) has decided to slip in what should be an easy tune-up fight against 39-year-old journeyman George Blades (23-4, 16 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud card on September 28th at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

The Stevenson-Cloud, as good as it is, needed a decent co-feature bout to help attract interest from the Canadian boxing fans. While the Pascal-Blades fight is far from being a decent fight, Pascal’s name alone should be more than enough to attract a ton of Canadian fans to this event.

Pascal is already scheduled to face Lucian Bute on January 18th at the Bell Centre, but Pascal wanted to get a fight in before then to stay busy. Bute and Pascal were already supposed to have fought each other on May 25th, but Bute suffered a hand injury causing the fight to be postponed. Pascal has only fought once in the past 2 years, so it was important for him to get in another fight to keep the ring rust off.

Jillian Michaels and Lukensia: Pampered Pair

Fitness trainer Jillian Michaels and Lukensia were seen going to a nail salon in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday (August 24). The 3-year-old wore a purple bow in her hair, jean shorts and striped top for the day out. On August 20 she went to the park with mom and got a piggy back ride.

Jillian- who also raises Phoenix, 1, with her partner Heidi Roades - recently tweeted: “Had to travel 4 work today last minute. I HATE leaving my kids. Does that ever get easier?”

In her interview with Ladies’ Home Journal Michaels said adopting Lukensia was fate.

“I’ve been to Haiti on and off since I was 27. I met her a year ago on a trip visiting orphanages for All Blessings International, an organization I work with. I was visiting this one orphanage and the next thing I knew she jumped into my arms. She just grabbed me and clung to me and I immediately felt something. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is my daughter.’ “

However the baby girl had already been placed with a family in Germany – but it didn’t work out.

Victoria Duval loses to Hantuchova in 2nd Round of US Open Tennis 2013

NEW YORK— Haitian teen Victoria Duval couldn’t build on her magical victory at the U.S. Open, losing in the second round Thursday.

Daniela Hantuchova, who’s 12½ years older, won 6-2, 6-3. Duval was up a break early in each set, but both times the veteran from Slovakia took control amid a flurry of errors by the 296th-ranked qualifier.

The 17-year-old Duval had upset 2011 U.S. Open champ Sam Stosur in her second Grand Slam match.

The 30-year-old Hantuchova has been ranked as high as No. 5, though that was more than a decade ago. A 2008 Australian Open semifinalist, her ranking has slipped to 48th. She hadn’t reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament since the 2012 Australian.

Haiti’s Valencia FC loses 1-2 to Cruz Azul in CONCACAF Champions League 2013

The groups are beginning to sort themselves out in the CONCACAF Champions League. The stage is halfway through, and while some teams were all but eliminated last matchday, it wasn't until this week that a handful of teams grabbed a stranglehold of their groups. Things can still change with three matchdays left, but Cruz Azul and Tijuana are both sitting pretty in their groups, while Heredia has a bit of margin for error in Group 5 as they get ready for their road matches.

Valencia 1-2 Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul's road to the top of Group 3 almost hit a bump in Haiti, where Valencia outplayed them for long stretches of the match. Valencia certainly had the better of chances too, but that wasn't enough. Jeronimo Amione put Cruz Azul in front with a header into an open goal and while Andre Amy equalized, Jesus Lara found a 85th minute goal to earn the visitors three valuable points.

Heredia 1-0 San Jose Earthquakes

Heredia took care of business at home last week with a win over Montreal and they did it again this week, beating San Jose in Guatemala City. Enrique Miranda notched the winner with a 20-yard blast that skipped off the turf and past David Bingham. The match was short on chances, and action, but that is just fine for the Guatemalans, who are three points clear of the Impact atop Group 5. The question now is whether Heredia can get the job done away because their last two group stage matches are in Montreal and San Jose.

Saul Williams wants Jay-Z to remain quiet on social issues

Haitian performer, Saul Williams believes there needs to be greater respect for the contributions of civil rights leaders such as Harry Belafonte. In the Red Bull Sound Select media fort, the poet shared his frustration with Jay-Z for recently calling Belafonte a “boy” on his song “Nickels and Dimes.” The insult was released in response to Belafonte’s comments that Jay-Z was not socially responsible. “Calling Belafonte ‘boy’ on record is not bold or courageous,” says Williams. “It is misinformed. Artists of our generation need to realize there is difference between social activism and charity. Belafonte gave money too but he was there. So I wish those who have unprogressive and practically Republican frames of mind would rap and talk about sports and stay quiet on the other shit.”

When asked whether he thinks the conflict was a case of intergenerational issues between those of the civil rights and post-civil rights era, Williams vehemently disagreed. “You can say it’s intergenerational but the truth and consciousness is not generational. I see someone [Jay-Z] who has brought into consumerist capitalistic ideals of the American dream and turned a blind eye to Dr. King and that’s the history of capitalism in black America.”

VIDEO: Victoria Duval defeats 2011 champion Sam Stosur in 1st round of US Open Tennis 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJsxMPLg2qQ

NEW YORK — Her brothers played tennis. Haitian professional tennis player Victoria Duval was more into ballet.

But while tagging along to watch them at a tournament, the director said she'd be better off playing than sitting there watching in her mom's lap.

"It was a 10-and-under tournament, I think, and I won it," Duval said. "I had no idea where to stand on the court or anything. After that, my mom said, `OK, you have to choose now.' Tennis seemed to be appropriate."

That's the short version of how the 17-year-old with the squeaky voice found herself at the U.S. Open, decked out in a pink dress, blue tennis shorts and square, white-rimmed glasses, knocking off one of the tournament's past champions Tuesday night.

She celebrated her 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 upset of 11th-seeded Sam Stosur with two huge leaps in the center of Armstrong Stadium that were accompanied by an even bigger smile. Her family turned their corner of the stands into a little mosh pit, sharing hugs and high-fives as they watched Victoria break through. With the win, she placed herself in the ever-growing line of great American tennis hopes.

Victoria Duval defeats 2011 champion Sam Stosur in 1st round of US Open Tennis 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- Haitian teenager Victoria Duval stunned 2011 champion Sam Stosur in the first round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old qualifier, ranked 296th, won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, leaping into the air in celebration after converting her fourth match point.

Duval was playing in just her second Grand Slam match. She also faced a former U.S. Open champion, Kim Clijsters, in the first round at Flushing Meadows last year.

She was facing a top-20 opponent for the first time Tuesday.

The 11th-seeded Stosur had reached at least the quarterfinals in her last three trips to the U.S. Open. She had 56 unforced errors.

Judge Gray: Taking American Military Interventions More Seriously

One of the first things that was done when our country was founded in 1787 was to establish the United States Department of War. This agency lasted until 1947, when it was re-organized and re-named the United States Department of Defense. But given our history since that time, the title of United States Department of Offense would have been more appropriate.

Since 1947, the United States has intervened militarily on more than 40 separate occasions in foreign countries. In addition to the more wellknown actions like in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, that list also includes Guatemala, Iran, Cuba, Indonesia, Chile, El Salvador, Grenada, Colombia, Haiti and Somalia. Some of those interventions have produced good and lasting results, but many have produced lasting disasters.

Some of those disasters are out in the open. For example, many people in Iran still hate our government for having deposed its legitimately-elected government in 1953 and imposed the Shah upon them. Similarly, the situations in Cuba, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan in many ways speak for themselves. But other disastrous results are far less visible.

For example, although a large number of people around the world still love America and Americans, they do not like or trust our government because of its interventionist policies. So in many ways we would probably be a lot safer today had we never intervened in many of those places, because those actions simply made people mad at us.

Washington Redskins Pierre Garçon poised for breakout year

The Washington Redskins are heading to the season with a NFC East title under their arms. The Redskins are in a tough division and will need to rekindle some of that magic to repeat as champions in a tough division.

Their running game behind rookie Alfred Morris who ran for 1,600 yards and the read-option setting up play action has the Redskins receivers ready for the ball to come their way. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon could be poised for a big year.

“In this offense you would love to be Pierre,” wide receiver Santana Moss said, via CBS Sports. “He’s going to be the Andre Johnson to this offense. That’s what they brought him here for, and if he keeps playing the way he’s playing, which I don’t doubt he will stop, he’s going to be that guy and he has every opportunity to be that guy. I used to sit back and watch Andre and say, ‘How can he be so open?’ And now I see it because there is so much you have to cover in this offense, and you can’t cover everybody.”

Last season, Pierre Garcon caught 44 passes for 633 yards in 10 games. He also had 4 touchdowns. To have an Andre Johnson like season he’d have more like 1,500 yards receiving.

Jason DeRulo talks possible engagement to Jordin Sparks

Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo are still not engaged. At least not yet.

"When the time is right, it will be right," Derulo told E! News when the subject came up as the cute couple walked the red carpet at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

However, the "Ridin' Solo" singer did seem to suggest it may actually happen sooner than later.

While talking about his new single, "Marry Me," Derulo admitted, "It is about Jordin, actually, and it's talking about how amazing it will be when I get down on one knee and it will be the greatest moment of my life."

He continued to gush, saying, "You can't fake anything because true love is true love, and that's the basis of our relationship."

Shots fired at Haitian human rights defender Malya Villard Appolon's home

NEW YORK - August 26 - Early Friday morning, a group of armed men arrived at the home of Malya Villard Appolon, General Coordinator of KOFAVIV, a Haitian grassroots women’s organization and long-time MADRE partner. The assailants fired gunshots at Ms. Villard Appolon’s house, leaving several bullet holes in her front gate and striking and breaking her front doorbell. The attackers returned later while police were at the scene, but officers were unable to make an arrest or apprehend the shooters.

“We are being attacked for trying to change something some people do not want changed,” said Marie Eramithe Delva, co-founder of KOFAVIV, in a statement to MADRE Executive Director Yifat Susskind. “We are being punished for defending women who are abused and for publicly speaking for women and children who cannot speak for themselves. They won’t stop until they silence us.”

This attack is the latest in series of escalating threats against KOFAVIV workers and their families. Unknown attackers have killed Ms. Villard-Appolon’s dogs, entered her home without permission and attempted to obtain information about her whereabouts, and appeared at the KOFAVIV office and both Ms. Villard-Appolon’s and Ms. Delva’s personal residences demanding money.

Both Ms. Villard Appolon’s and Ms. Delva’s children have been followed, making it unsafe for them to attend school. Since March 2012, there have been several kidnapping attempts aimed at both Ms. Villard Appolon’s children and Ms. Delva’s children. Ms. Villard Appolon herself was kidnapped in 2010 and paid a ransom to be allowed to return to her family. Ms. Delva and Ms. Villard Appolon are outspoken survivors of politically-motivated beatings and sexual assaults.

Claire Limyè Lanmè—Claire of the Sea Light—is an enchanting child born into love and tragedy in Ville Rose, Haiti. Claire’s mother died in childbirth, and on each of her birthdays Claire is taken by her father, Nozias, to visit her mother’s grave. Nozias wonders if he should give away his young daughter to a local shopkeeper, who lost a child of her own, so that Claire can have a better life.

Word of Claire's disappearance spreads through the village. From there, the reader is taken on a journey through time, connecting lives in unexpected ways.

Danticat tells Weekend Edition host Rachel Martin how her own experiences as a child in Haiti helped to shape this luminous young character.

Ovince St. Preux crushes Gian Villante with 1st Round KO at UFC Fight Night 26

Cody Donovan vs. Ovince St. Preux

Our second Facebook fight will take place in the light heavyweight division with Cody Donovan (8-2) looking for his second UFC victory against former Tennessee college football player Ovince St. Preux (13-5). The third man inside the Octagon will be Herb Dean.

Round 1: Donovan trying to make this a “dirty” striking fight, as St. Preux is a bigger athletic, but still relatively new to the game. Donovan using the clinch, working hard for a takedown, but OSP is staying upright despite his corner yelling at him to “take him down right now.” Big sweep by OSP gets Donovan to the ground and the former standout football player finishes him, landing several uncontested lefts to the face. Donovan has no idea where he is as Herb Dean checks on him. Big reaction by the still-coming TD Garden crowd.

The Other Side of the Water follows a group of young immigrants who take an ancient music from the hills of Haiti and reinvent it on the streets of Brooklyn. The journey of this unlikely band offers a unique insight into the Haitian-American experience -- a rare glimpse into a world of music, spirituality, and cultural activism.

Part-carnival, part-vodou ceremony, and grassroots protest, “Rara” is one of the most breathtaking and contested forms of music in the Americas. Rara originally served as a voice of the slaves in their revolt against the French, and as the voice of those struggling against ongoing dictatorships in Haiti. This documentary follows the journey of DJARARA – the only sustained rara band in America – through a hidden New York landscape of vodou temples, underground economies, violent politics, and ground-shaking music.

Combining archival footage and vérité narratives, this documentary focuses on the journey of the poetic visionary Pé Yves. Yves has led a Rara movement in New York for 20 years, through an era when the media accusing Haitians of bringing AIDS to America, to times of civil chaos in Haiti, to police brutality riots in New York – each time re-imagining Rara as a voice for an evolving Diaspora. Yet when a new generation arrives bringing a radically different vision of the music, and the Haitian Christian community attacks Yves for promoting a Vodou ritual, he’s caught in the middle of a struggle for the meaning of Haitian identity.

Ultimately, The Other Side of the Water is about the struggle to merge the traditional and the modern; the island and the City; the imagined and the real. The documentary tells the story of one man who learns to hold true to a vision; a motley band that comes to speak for a larger community; and a music that manages to create a new meaning of home in the Diaspora.

Black August: a Tribute to Freedom Fighters

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Aug. 28, 1963, galvanized hundreds of thousands in the streets of Washington, D.C. A. Philip Randolph helped to establish the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in Harlem, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 1925. The Haitian Revolution first broke the chains of French colonialism in August 1791. August marks the Nat Turner slave rebellion of 1831 and the Watts uprising of 1965. The Philadelphia Police Department first raided the MOVE organization on Aug. 8, 1978, giving way to the unjustly imprisoned MOVE 9. August also bears the births of Fred Hampton, Marcus Garvey and Mutulu Shakur.

“Black August” is a month-long celebration that marks the remembrance of the lives of freedom fighters who gave their all for Black liberation, freedom, radical resistance and mass consciousness. The official origin of Black August was in honor of the fallen soldiers who valiantly fought to liberate Black Panther leader George Lester Jackson from the modern day slave trade we now call the U.S. penal system.

Wilkine Brutus, a Haitian poet and writer, ask the question on 'Zimmerman x Martin: Strange Fruit(vale)'.

How a society feels it's logically worth dumping all of their selective energy (and tax money) on a single story is quite beyond me.
How many unjust stories have we ignored since this Zimmerman/Martin story broke?

As Black male, I'm more disgusted by our (American) selective memory and redundant pattern of dialogues than I am about the Trayvon Martin case. Check out the video, share, and subscribe for a follow up.

Video: Sexism Benefit Women, Too? (Benevolent Sexism) - Wilkine Brutus

Wilkine Brutus, a Haitian poet and writer, ask the question 'Sexism Benefit Women, Too? (Benevolent Sexism)'.

Last month, Noah Berlatsky wrote a piece for The Atlantic called, "When Men Experience Sexism." He wrote in his subtitle, "There are some practices and policies that are unfair to men. But this fact should unite men with feminists, not drive them apart." All in all, his piece was about cases in which men actually suffered from gender discrimination.

Well, that sums up what the video is all about. In this video, I shared single story about a nightclub experience with a woman, and called for a more balance approach to the gender debate. I also mentioned that term, "Benevolent Sexism."

Toward the end, two questions to answer were assigned for female viewers.

Wilkine Brutus, a Haitian poet and writer, on '80's Babies/Gen Y (Turning 30 Sucks?)'.

So, how do I cope with turning 30 this year? I've figured out the coping method which suits me; it's all about balancing the "locus of control." Yep...to avoid the existential crisis of aging, I've decided to embrace age old memories and accept fate.

I've also decided to explore idiosyncratic similarities that make Generation Y so unique from other generations. I included other things that turned 30 in the video; I was inspired by Mental Floss:

I've stumbled on this "locus of control" theory by researching the way people cope with aging.

According to wikipedia, it's it's a theory in "personality pschology." It went on to say, "A person's "locus" (Latin for "place" or "location") is conceptualised as either internal (the person believes they can control their life) or external (meaning they believe that their decisions and life are controlled by environmental factors which they cannot influence)."

Well...there you have it. Please, enjoy the video, subscribe & share! Onelove! -Wilkine Brutus

Wilkine Brutus, a Haitian poet and writer, talks 'Humanity & Sports: Miami Heat, Game 6'.

"Miami Heat: Sports & Humanity" discusses the human connection with sports. This quick video centers around the 2013 NBA Finals between Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs, specifically the epic game 6.

"Sports is the ultimate human connection; it's essentially a life metaphor."
Take yourself out of competition for a minute. Watch how humans react when games are at stake: oh how loyalty is such a glass concept, especially when some fans leave before the games end, how players illustrate passion & determination, how coaches are just parents with a game plan, how time dictates our every move, how the love and hate for players is like the inconsistent feelings we have for each other, contradictions, faith, challenges...Sure, life is like a sport, but everyday is game 7."

Video: Racist Questions: Racial Microaggressions? - Wilkine Brutus

Wilkine Brutus, a Haitian poet and writer, ask the question 'Racist Questions: Racial Microaggressions?'.

Writer, Kat Chow, recently wrote an article for NPR.

"What's one question you've been dying to ask another race but never do because of the impending 'THAT'S RACIST' aftermath?"

The Code Switch team at NPR was intrigued by this question posted on "AskReddit."

And, so was I. Because little racial micro-aggressions, although subtle most of the times, does eventually cause anger to build up. But when put into context and circumstances, you soon realize how little the human race know about each other. And that's fine, so long as we don't one-up our struggles. I've certainly gotten use to the micro-aggressions in South Korea. What about you? Can you think of any instances? And how did you respond?

Tell Me More's summer reading series, Island Reads, highlights authors from the Caribbean. Dominican novelist Julia Alvarez's A Wedding in Haiti started as a promise to a young Haitian man who was working on a farm. If he ever married, Alvarez and her husband would attend the wedding. Julia Alvarez told Tell Me More guest host Celeste Headlee about that journey and more.

Jenna Wolfe gives birth to baby girl Harper Estelle Wolfeld

World, meet Harper Estelle Wolfeld Gosk! On Wednesday, Aug. 21, shortly after Jenna Wolfe gave birth to a baby girl, the Today show weekend anchor's girlfriend, NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk, shared the first photo of the couple's daughter via Twitter.

"First pic. We couldn't be happier," Gosk captioned the sweet shot, which shows a serene-looking Wolfe kissing the newborn's tiny head. "Thanks for all the great messages."

As previously reported, Wolfe gave birth to baby Harper at 7:31 p.m. on Aug. 21. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces.

Just hours earlier, Wolfe wrote her final pre-baby blog post on Today.com, joking that she was working on "slightly borrowed time" and that her labor could literally begin at any second. "Goodbye for now! When we meet again, I'll be a mom," she titled the post.

"Steph thinks I'm a little nutty lately (and rightfully so)," she wrote. "But apparently there's a correlation between proximity to your due date and nesting nuttiness. (Watch me have this baby today.)"

Félix Pie hits home run in Tribe 6-2 lose to Indians

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Haitian Left fielder Felix Pie launched a solo shot for the Tribe's first homer in its last 10 games, but it wasn't nearly enough as opposing starter Jeff Mandel allowed just one run through 7.0 innings to pilot the Syracuse Chiefs (61-71) to a 6-2 win over the Indianapolis Indians (73-58) on Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Despite the defeat, the Tribe's Magic Number to clinch the International League West Division still dropped to four courtesy of Columbus' loss to Norfolk.
Indianapolis' bats never quite got it going against opposing righty Mandel (W, 7.0 IP, 6 H, ER, 6 SO), who allowed just six hits through his 7.0 frames of one-run ball. The starter was in control from his opening pitch and mowed through the first 10 Tribe batters before ever allowing a baserunner. Even then, Mandel induced an inning-ending twin killing to face the minimum amount of batters through the first 13 outs, and just one batter over the minimum through the opening 5.1 innings.

Mandel's lone blemish in his first four nearly perfect frames came via a one-out single from SS Robert Andino. Though the base knock didn't cause any damage in the big scheme of the game, it gave Andino hits in 12 of his first 15 games with the Tribe, and 20 overall in that span.

Syracuse matched Andino's base knock with two far bigger one of their own in the home half of the fourth. CF Corey Brown marked the first of three straight Chiefs batters to reach base as he doubled to right in front of a walk from 1B Chris Marrero, before 2B Will Rhymes put the game out of a reach with a towering two-run blast that gave the home team a 3-0 lead.
