PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI – A U.S. hotel chain opened a hotel in Haiti on Thursday for the first time in 15 years.
Best Western International has completed construction on a $15 million, seven-story hotel that features 106 guest rooms and several suites.
The towering facility is located in the hillside district of Petionville and is targeted at the business traveler.
The new hotel is part of a larger hotel boom in Haiti that has taken hold since the earthquake in 2010 destroyed thousands of buildings.
To date, developers are building or planning at least seven hotels and many hope that the businesses will create thousands of jobs in a country where unemployment hovers around 60 percent. Together, the projects add up to more than a $100 million investment.

Jenna Wolfe, a Haitian NBC "Today" news anchor, announced on the morning show on Wednesday that she is having a baby girl and the baby is due on August 27 and that she will keep a diary-style blog about her pregnancy.
"This is big for me, I'm actually pregnant," Wolfe, who is the anchor for "Weekend Today," said. "I'm quite pregnant, actually."
"It's ... about documenting my fears, funnies and follies that come with doing this for the first time," Wolfe wrote in her first entry. "I've never changed a diaper ... I don't really understand what a breast pump is."

Chrysler begins shipping of Ralph Gilles's 2013 SRT Viper
Almost a year to the day after SRT president and CEO Ralph Gilles first introduced – and kissed the fender of – the 2013 SRT Viper at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the high-performance coupe has begun shipping to dealers. The first production cars started rolling off the line at Chrysler's Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit back in January (a facility Gilles lovingly compares to Santa's workshop), but The Detroit News is reporting that the cars just started heading to customers across the US on Sunday.
Two of the first examples destined for driveways include a Stryker Red example that was the very 2013 Viper to be sold (the car was won by Scott Thomas of Oklahoma City at a Barrett-Jackson charity auction for cancer for $300,000), along with a white example headed to Gilles' personal collection. The report says that Gilles took delivery of his Viper and put just 30 miles on it before heading to New York for this week's auto show. What, he didn't drive?

Far from being a dispassionate observer of these developments, however, the media has in fact been central to increasing those tensions and preparing the public to expect a military confrontation. But as the online media rises to displace the traditional forms by which the public forms its understanding of the world, many are now beginning to see first hand how the media lies the public into war.

In Durban, South Africa, five heads of state meet on March 26-27 to assure the rest of Africa that their countries’ corporations are better investors in infrastructure, mining, oil and agriculture than the traditional European and US multinationals. The Brazil-Russia-India-China-SA (BRICS) summit will also include 16 heads of state from Africa, including some notorious tyrants. A new $50 billion ‘BRICS Bank’ will probably be launched. There will be more talk about monetary alternatives to the US dollar.
There seem to be three narratives about BRICS. The first is promotional and mainly comes from government and allied intellectuals; the second perspective is uncertainty, typical of fence-sitting scholars and NGOs; and the third is highly critical, from forces sometimes termed the ‘independent left.’

Our man Steven J. Ewing recently spent some time in a 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee, and while he found a lot to love – particularly underhood – he didn't care for the sedan's retro-steeped visuals, preferring the standard SRT's look instead. Perhaps he'll dig this throwback look instead. Over the weekend, Chrysler unveiled this handsome 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 392 Appearance Package at the eighth annual Spring Festival of LXs, a gathering of Charger, Challenger and Chrysler 300 enthusiasts held in Irvine, California.
Unveiled by SRT CEO Ralph Gilles in front of an estimated 2,500 Spring Fest goers, the 392 features 20-inch Black Vapor Chrome alloys set off by a black-painted roof panel, hood bulge, spoiler and mirror caps. Additional exterior changes include model-specific striping and badging along with the requisite serialized dash plaque inside. The 392 will be available in five colors – Billet Silver Metallic, Bright White, Hemi Orange, Plum Crazy and the TorRed pain seen here.
Performance-wise, the 392 remains unchanged from standard SRT8s, but that's hardly a slight – the 6.4 liter Hemi V8 continues to churn out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Like other 2013 SRT8s, the 392 benefits from the institution of a new launch control system and a retuned three-mode adaptive suspension.

Broken Stones by Guetty Felin, a award-winning independent Haitian filmmaker, is a documentary about the fate of a well-known Catholic cathedral in Port-Au-Prince Haiti before and after the earthquake on January 12, 2010. Broken Stones not only tells the story of the church but also that of its surviving parishioners in the Quartier Cathedrale neighborhood. Filmmaker Guetty Felin shares their story beautifully and, as one audience member pointed out, the film truly “captured a lot of the Haitian soul.”
One of men in the film commented that there are 5,000 NGO’s in Haiti but there aren’t 5,000 problems…there’s only about 3 or 4…. Millions of dollars have poured into the NGO’s since the earthquake but Haitians only get a trickle and see no major improvements in their day-to-day lives. The documentary “Haiti: Where Did all the Money Go?” notes there is no central management of the NGO’s in Haiti and they are not held accountable for their performance.
An interviewee commented that people were “living in endless idleness,” in part probably due to the lack of jobs available to the survivors. Given the enormous amount of physical post-earthquake reconstruction needed in Port-Au-Prince, it is easy to see why survivors would expect job creation to meet that requirement.
A valuable theme explored in the movie is the need for the Haitian people to regain their confidence. The country was built on the valiancy of its people, who were the first Caribbean nation to claim their freedom from colonists in 1804. “We need to reconstruct Haiti, but we also need to reconstruct ourselves.”

Fitzgerald "Fidgi" Haig, a retired Haitian soccer player and now coach, was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame on Feb. 1, 2013.
In 58 games from 1987-90, Haig scored 45 goals and handed out 18 assists for 108 points as a forward. He helped the Panthers win their first NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship in 1988.
He has been a successful coach at the club level, as the girls soccer coach at Satellite High School and as the women's soccer coach at FIT.
Haig graduated from FIT in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

MIAMI, FL, USA - The first round of the Sony Open Tennis came to a close with 22 matches on Wednesday, and the only former champion in action made a smooth progression to the second round, as Svetlana Kuznetsova battled past Lourdes Domínguez Lino in straight sets over on Court 1, 63 63.

There was one rough patch - from 5-1 up in the first set Kuznetsova lost five of the next six games, closing out the set but falling behind 3-0 in the second set - but the Russian brushed that patch off and reeled off the last six games of the match to finish the Spaniard off in an hour and 10 minutes.
Miami has been one of Kuznetsova's best stops in the past, not only winning the title in 2006 but making the semifinals twice more, in 2008 (losing to eventual champion Serena Williams in three sets) and 2009 (losing to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka in three sets). About 30 minutes after the speech their bus ran out of gas and Boukman Eksperyans had to stop their performance. The first of several sabotages made to Boukman during carnival. Throughout the three day celebration of haitian national carnival in Cap-Haitien the rasin band Boukman Eksperyans were sabotaged. The reasons seems indeed political and is a serious blow to their freedom of expression. Boukman was the only rasin band allowed to play during carnival and this only after demonstrations made to the government and festival commitee by the people of Cap-Haitien. This video shows some of the events from the 3rd day of carnival.
Here follows a short account of the events:
On the 1st day of carnival Boukman was able to play for a while, but after lead singer Mimerose "Manze" Beaubrun addressed president Martelly their truck run out of gas. No one came to help out and Boukman had to stop their performance and leave the truck. They had not even finished one forth of the route.
On the 2nd day of carnival Boukman were supposed to start as number three in line. Upon starting they were blocked by the police and told they now was last in line. The band waited 6 hours and when they eventually started a truck in front and back of them kept pressing them in, destroying their sound. The sound equipment given to them by the government and carnival committee was also really bad this day, making it hard to hear their lyrics and sound.
On the 3rd day Boukman Eksperyans was told they were to start last in line, a joke since the band is the most loved band by the Haitian people. Before even starting the route and reaching a bigger audience the truck was again blocked by the police. Leadsinger Theodore "Lóló" Beaubrun confronted the police, but no answers to the blockade was given. 15 minutes later the tire of their truck was punctured. Again, no help came and this ended their performance on the last day of carnival. A demonstrations was made by the band and people in Cap-Haitien. The government has been silent about the events.
Material is part of an upcoming documentary about Boukman Eksperyans. Produced by Jørgen Johansen and Idun Hermansen Kvasbø.

Brandon Jennings scored 24 points and Monta Ellis added 21 to help Milwaukee hang on for a 102-95 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.
Milwaukee rallied from an 11-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter Sunday against Orlando and went on to a 115-109 victory over the visiting Magic.

Fitness star and ‘Biggest Loser’ trainer Jillian Michaels and daughter Lukensia, were one happy duo on the red carpet at the opening night for Cavalia’s Odysseo in Burbank, California on Wednesday.
Lukensia wore bright yellow pants, paired with a cool black washed jacket and purple sneakers. Mom Jillian also sported a cool outfit in black skinny pants and a maroon leather jacket.
Michaels adopted Lukensia last year from Haiti.
“I was visiting this one orphanage, and the next thing I knew, she jumped into my arms,” the trainer told Ladies’ Home Journal of her little girl. “She just grabbed me and clung to me and I immediately felt something. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is my daughter.’”
Michaels also has a son with partner Heidi Rhoades who was born last May.

Somehow I missed the memo that Jillian Michaels is into women. After some quick research, I’ve discovered that Jillian has been with her current partner, Heidi Rhoades, for some time. In 2010, she admitted to having dated both men and women, and it sounds like (to quote Bono) she’s found what she’s been looking for. As such, Jillian and Heidi adopted a 2-year-old girl, Lukensia, from Haiti last year, and Heidi gave birth to a baby boy, Phoenix, last year as well. So the two of them became sudden parents to a toddler and a baby at the same time, which sounds difficult as hell. It’s probably hard enough to parent both ages at once, but to not even have a warm-up period with the first kid before the baby comes along? I bet that was a very disorienting experience, and now Jillian admits that it’s exceedingly difficult to fit her entire life into one day, and she’s even softening up her rather militant approach to fitness. As the dust settled on Port-au-Prince, hope was the last thing anybody could see.
When the earth shook, his whole neighborhood disappeared. Now a boy and his mother are living in the soccer stadium, in a shelter made of tin and bedsheets, with long lines for food and water. But even with so much sorrow all around, he finds a child playing with a soccer ball made of rags. Soon many children are caught up in the magic of the game that transports them out of their bleak surroundings and into a world where anything is possible.
Then the kids are given a truly wonderful gift. A soccer ball might seem simple, but really it's a powerful link between a heartbroken country's past and its hopes for the future. Jesse Joshua Watson has created an inspiring testament to the strength of the Haitian people and the promise of children.
