VIDEO: World Summit on the Future of Haiti 'Solidarity Beyond the Crisis'

The government of the Dominican Republic convened the World Summit on the Future of Haiti: Solidarity Beyond the Crisis. The meeting was held today in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

The aim of the meeting was to reiterate the sustained commitment of the international community to Haiti, contribute to strengthening democracy and stability there, focusing international cooperation on specific projects and finding ways to include the private sector in the process of "re-founding" the country.

The Mexican delegation, led by the Foreign Ministry´s Head of the Economic Relations and International Cooperation Unit (URECI), Rogelio Granguillhome Morfín, confirmed Mexico's commitment to continuing to cooperate with the people and government of Haiti through humanitarian aid and long-term projects throughout the reconstruction phase.

The Ministry official highlighted the enormous effort of Mexican society as a whole during the emergency phase that resulted in contributions of more than 15,000 tons of aid, the last shipment of which left for Port-au-Prince on May 31.

The head of the URECI emphasized the need for greater coordination of the international aid for Haiti and the urgent need to be more effective and efficient during the reconstruction phase.

He stressed how important it is for the private sector and the civil society organizations to join in the long-term efforts to assist Haiti.

The event was attended by delegations from 54 countries and 35 international organizations, and was chaired by the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández. Also participating were the President of Haiti, René Préval, and the United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti, William Clinton.

NEW YORK, NY - Grammy-winning Haitian-born humanitarian and ambassador has added the new title to his resume after being recently honored by the Western ConnecticutState University in Danbury.

He received the doctorate degree after delivering a commencement speech titled `Vision for the Future` to the graduating class of 2010 at the school.

Additionally, Jean received a $9,500 check for his Yéle Haiti Foundation, which became the go-to organization for donations to help victims of the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12.
